Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

You sound surprised :)

Thanks for yr review info!

When discrepancies happen W&D I think of the 'special' VM wines that seem to
get around.

Try to avoid cork, prefer screw caps, otherwise well credentialed winery.

Should be OK, S/I/L will grab some and we'll split it.

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

Thank you gents, got into Halliday Wine Companion 2017, when I remembered we have had one for last fortnight -

"McLaren Vale Shiraz 2012, Beefy Shiraz with tar, plum & leather characters, bristling beneath a veneer of resiny oak.
Its an old- school style but there's no denying the power of fruit. Cork. 14.5%. Rating 92 to 2024. $38 CM"

A little different to VM's description.

You sound surprised :)
VM marketing again.

Don't mistake me, I think you're right on the money, I really was referring to the ahem, "poetic licence" VM seem to indulge in when describing their latest stock, Shirvo sounds really good!

Every reviewer's review is going to be different wrt to notes, but there's nothing in the VM description that contradicts what Parker, Halliday etc. are saying.

Shirvington make reds in a traditional "big" SA style. Some of their vintages are pushing 15.5% or 16%. The 2013 was the first I've tried that had a more normal 14% ABV.

If you like big, bold McLaren Vale shiraz, then that's what Shirvington normally dish up. Back in the early 2000s the winemakers were Sparky and Sarah of Mollydooker fame (so that probably gives you an idea of the wine being produced)

My reviews are on CellarTracker - I've tried the 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2013 (not up yet) shiraz, plus a bunch of their cabernets in the past 12-18 months, so you should have quite a few reviews to pick from.

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

W&d, any intel on the 2012 Shirvington Cabernet?

I must confess to not having tried any of the Shirvington range so I am purely basing my opinion on online sources, but they sound like a pretty good bet especially when the price reduction is taken into account. Another AFFer who shall remain nameless (and whose opinion I respect;) ) felt that it is possible to do better especially at full price. The Mollydooker duo, Sparky and Sarah Marquis apparently worked with the winery in its early days and after having sampled a few of their offerings imagine that could only be a good thing, Lisa Perotti-Brown gives it a reasonable rap: "Deep garnet with hints of purple, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon has pronounced cassis, crushed blueberries and blackberries with pencil shavings, violets and cloves hints. Medium to full-bodied, it has good concentration with plenty of finesse, purity and fine, ripe tannins. It finishes long and fresh."- Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, Aug 2015 " It's a very personal thing this wine caper so, caveat emptor.... cheers W&D

To echo this, if you like big south Australian Reds then I don't think you can really go wrong with the Shirvington Shiraz and Cabernet at the prices it's current being dished up at. I boomed on the 2008 Shiraz recently - 16% and a massive wine but highly elegant, complex and smooth and wears the alcohol really well.

nice, wasnt 100% sure due to price - let us know the verdict please
Hi chonka the Haselgrove il Padrone shiraz 2016 is a very nice wine as good as the Catkin and a touch better. It reminded me of the 2012 Catkin. This is a full bodied wine loaded with sweet juicy dark fruit that fills your mouth; oak just there;juicy savoury tannins and a long finish. Cheers Rug.

Excuse my ignorance but is the Cab Sav up at the moment?

2009 Shirvington Cab Sav is up too, at $22pb. Will be trying my 2008 tonight and then deciding whether to boom.

Which one is it? Can you link??

Strangely enough the 95 JH isn't advertised on BM, only 93 SK. If the 'Ironstone' is indeed the same wine, then it got 95 JH, and did well in the Ray Jordan Top 100

Amelia Park Frankland River Shiraz 2014
Winner: Best Value Red ($25 - $40)

I've only had 1 bottle of the Shiraz myself so far (and had the Cab/Merlot last night), decent enough for $9.90 but seems my palate differs somewhat from JH/RJ and other AFF members
