Vinomofo Wine Deals

Its such a tempter....TBH I would never have dreamed of ever parting with the requisite quantity of cash to afford a bottle of RWT. I tried this wine at the recent Treasury event and it was very good although I preferred the 2012 St Henri at the time and didn't think it was worth $180 a bottle.... although what is worth that?

The Wolf Blass is available from Grays for $150 (plus free shipping), so you're paying $135 for the bottle of RWT. That's not a terrible price, but unless you're in a hurry to buy or want to lock in a bottle of 2013 for sentimental reasons, you can probably get it better during a sale, if you're willing to run the risk that there might not be a sale :)

That said, Dan Murphys everyday price of $150 (less CR / WISH card) would be a similar price.

FWIW, a bunch of people got the 2013 RWT for $100/bottle from Winemarket when they had a 20% off sale and didn't do their usual Penfolds exclusion. Langtons had the 2012 RWT at $115/bot at the beginning of the year, before it crept up to $150 a couple of months ago. So there are sometimes deals around.

FWIW: here are the Grays links ($149.94/6 pack, free delivery):

Has anyone tried the Wolf Blass before?

I tried the Wolf Blass and liked it very much, though I'm partial towards this sort of wine. Thought it very elegant, fragrant and smooth. Easy pleaser that would also go some cellaring distance. Thanks to AC's tip for that too.

Is the Ulithorne Familia shiraz back again?
I think you're right, I bought a dozen the last time it was offered and it was probaly one of the most disappointing wines I've imbibed for many a year! Lacking any discernible character, insipid, bland, "plush plum flavours" ballocks! I can't understand why Jancis Robinson and Tony Keyes have given it any credibility at all (and of course that is my subjective opinion BUT I have been drinking wine for around 35 years now and have quite a few benchmarks to judge it on)...

edit: sorry, just realised AC had given the game away in an earlier post, would be very keen to hear another FF's experiences with this wine

Thanks for the heads up. Really appreciated. Jumped on it! I just got back from SA last week on a winery tour and maintained restraint. I think I deserve it.

Yup - back again.

I ordered a 2015 McLaren Shiraz last week, thinking it was Ullithorne.

But was delivered today - Allegiance 'The Artisan' Shiraz. Anyone tried it?

Considering whether to return it and jump on Ullithorne today - presuming it's definitely it this time.

Haven't had Ullthorne Shiraz before either but loved their Dona GSM.

I purchased the Ultithorne - at first I thought it was great as it was not a fruitbomb. after a few more bottles I think my taste buds were off that time - it is no fruit bomb in fact the opposite - it lacks in fruit - I won't champion any more wines until I have at least tried 3 bottles. Would not recommend it. Sorry to anyone who relied upon my view it was good.

Still trying to find a happy medium - so far in the past year have returned more wine than over the previous 5 years combined.

Is VM still as generous and ready with their returns? A few of my mates were just saying VM's becoming tighter with their returns policies.

Ulithorne Familia Shiraz 2014 was one of the most disappointing wines I've had from VM. I would recommend against it.

Mitolo Cantiniere. It appears to be sold only by Vinomofo (in which case, the RRP is entirely artificial), and many buyers last year were unimpressed. I think the 2013 needs more time; not awful at $21 but not great value. 2014 might be a lesser vintage in that region, but so much depends on the winemaking.
i think that VINOMOFO are doing a fair bit of Mitolo type deals
The winery makes a wine for Vinomofo at a $10-12 price point, then puts the wine on their website at a hugely inflated price, $30-40. If someone buys the wine from the website the winery make a killing and it looks like the Vinomofo punter gets a bargain. Think of Innocent Bystander MULE 2015 Shiraz, Mt Avoca back block shiraz or cabernet and obviously the Mitolo wine. Not all their deals are like this but i reckon quite a few are.

There may be a bit of price fixing on the websites but I don't think wineries are making wines specifically to be sold on VinoMofo.

I do agree with some of the general sentiment that there is a huge amount of utter tosh being sold on the site which is often overmarketed by the Fo and JH's hugely inflated ratings.

I'm glad we have this forum to discuss the deals, some of which are excellent. I've always found the mixed 6 premium reds packs very good value for money and there is some great wine available at around the $20 a bottle mark as well as the occasional excellent cheaper deal. Churchview, Bleasdale etc spring to mind.

I never had the misfortune of purchasing any of the Mitolo Cartiniere but I did pick up a 6 pack of the recent Mitolo Savitar 2005. Hoping to try my first of these on the weekend and report back.

Great post AC - You have summed up my reasons for not buying very well.

Other than the Mitolo Cantiniere, and VM buying up the entire Haselgrove Batch 187, I don't think any of the others are "made for VM" - the Mitolo Savitar has been made for many vintages - predating VM by a decade or so. The Mule has rating from Halliday etc, so it's not "made for VM"

You can get RWT (and indeed most of the TWE / Penfolds stable) at Costco also.

Not sure of the current pricing, but I remember it being reasonable.

Penfolds is selling RWT for $150 and last March 2015 the other Benson White for $27.50.

Data Point - I bought a doz RWT from Dans's when it was $700 for 6 - $116.66 less 18% Gift/CR got it down to ~$95.66 - I missed a slightly better deal a month earlier when it was $109.95ea in 6s + ~$90.15 after Gift/CR IMCCAC - may have been cheaper but not aware.
