Vinomofo Wine Deals

Re: Mitolo Cantiniere - First Thoughts

I wouldn't normally open my reds at such a young age, but given the angst on this forum about the Mitolo, I felt the need to decide for myself whether it was a keeper.

Disclaimer: I have purchased a large collection of wine from Vinomofo over the years and have yet to make a return - some have been better than others, but to date all have been an acceptable quality for the bottle price (or at least not horrible enough to overcome my inherent laziness). Fortunately or unfortunately, this means that my collection has swelled to over 800 bottles, so I have long-forgotten which ones I didn't enjoy the first time around.

I received my six pack this morning and was lucky enough to be working from home today, so I quickly popped the case into my wine room where it has been sitting comfortably at a climate-controlled 15C.

Having poured a glass through a Vinturi aerator and allowed it to breathe at room temperature for 15 minutes, my initial thoughts are:
  • visually, it is an extremely dark purple (almost inky black) with significant legs on the glass
  • on the nose, it is somewhat sweet and dominated by black cherries and a hint of spiciness
  • on the palate, it is very light and I find quite balanced - certainly on the lighter end of the shiraz spectrum. Very much a fruit-forward style with tart acidity and a hint of chocolate rather than spice and tannins
  • main negative is the heat from the high alcohol content that dominates the entire experience

In summary, I don't think this one is a particularly complex wine nor one that I believe will improve with 15+ years of cellaring, but it is certainly a wine that will pair well with rich food and I think will be enjoyed in the company of friends that prefer a lighter red.

Anyways, that's my two cents.

Re: Mitolo Cantiniere - First Thoughts

Keeper for me.

It is good (but not fantastic) value at $20 per bottle. Completely different story if I had paid the $68 RRP, but I think it is better than most of what I would find at the bottleshop in the $20 range.

I have a feeling that if this was priced at $12.50, there would not be that much anxiety built in. I have never had Mitolo before but the reputation is there. Reading the winery tasting notes, this limited release wine(probably most of the 500 cases went to their subscribers and fo members) is made in their own inimitable style offering - 'purity of varietal flavour(tick), elegance of structure(tick), soft tannins(tick), and offering rich(tick), powerful(fail), and complex(tick). Vibrant fruit(tick).

So next to the Vinomofo notes."Bursting with blackberry(tick), dripping in dark chocolate(tick, although not dripping in a Bruce McAvaney way), just a hint of freshly ground coffee(fail, I think Karel or John copped a wiff of Andre's cappuccino machine in the kitchen with this one), and toasted coconut(fail, obviously one of the gals tanning herself in the courtyard with fake coconut scented tanning oil). This wine is smooth and silky on the palate(tick), with a driving power(fail, its a Daewoo not an Aston martin, however it does have a Daewoo sort of price), and intensity that lingers long after you've polished off a bottle.(tick).

It certainly doesn't justify its flagship $68 alleged price tag, but it does tick nearly all of the descriptions mentioned. One last thought, maybe it was Andre drinking that coffee whilst getting Ambre Solaire coconut oil rubbed into him?

Paxton Jones Block up again for the lovers. Had a bottle of this the weekend before last, fantastic.

Best red I have had so far this year, beating out the 2010 Parous Shiraz. Amazing to drink now but will easily hold up for another 20+ years.

I bought 18. The max for my year off after uni/before grad job budget :(.

Just received my first Vinomofo order today, and it inspired me to make my first post on this forum. A day of new experiences.

I misidentified a black market deal and have ended up with Willoughby Park Kalgan Ironbock shiraz 2012. Anyone else have this? With a signup discount ended up paying $20 a bottle = can anyone comment on whether its a good drop for the price (worth keeping?). I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

I must say, I actually enjoyed the vinomofo experience, and will probably keep up to date with this thread and order again soon!
