Vinomofo Wine Deals

Heydon Estate W.G Grace
High quality producer, next to Vasse Felix and Thompson Estate. Wine made my Mark Messenger (Juniper Estate).
Nice wine. Original owners recently sold business and new owners are rebranding.
cheers
Good wine but not quite to the same standard as Vasse Felix IMO

Hi everyone!

Thinking that this:

is the 2012 vintage of McGuigan The Philosophy. Seems to have the same VM description as the 2013 Philosophy from memory. Anyone agree/disagree?

So I tried this VM more expensive offering in a shape of SA Cab/Shiraz - we split the box three ways and a friend was happy to share bottle. As we all knew - it is McGuigan Philosophy 2013.

First thing first - it is a bloody heavy bottle. Weighing just under 2kgs. What are they compensating for was my initial thought. On my way walking to the restaurant in Kings Cross I felt quite safe as you could defend yourself with this weapon.

This wine is very very good and I think it definitely worth $50 we paid for it. It feels extremely dry in the beginning so you get a feel as though your palate and tongue suddenly became covered with sanding paper as you take the first sip but it is so well balanced with acidity that this feeling quickly goes away leading to a very long delicate finish.

I think from reading some blurbs that it is multiregional and is made to emulate the Grange - not really sure about that as its been three years since I had Grange - but one of my dinner companion immediately asked if he could get any more - it was that good.

It combines both characteristics - savoury and yet with enough fruit to create a harmony and a perfect balance.

A very polished wine and more medium rather than full bodied and I may put my two bottles safely away for a few years to see how it develops as it really felt quite young to drink. I must admit I was a bit sceptical about this wine but I am not any more.

Magnificent drop
Thanks for the review on this wine olympicwiz. If you had the choice between The Philosophy 2013 or 2016 The Thing what would you buy to put away for those special occasions ??

I couldn't find a match for the Pinot Noir Syrah 2017 – Black Market Deal #38114 but it's a blend I'm interested in so bought it anyway. Once it arrived it turned out to be the 2017 Saint & Scholar Pinot Noir Shiraz, haven't opened a bottle yet. The Syrah / Shiraz discrepancy is why I couldn't find it!
I must say I am intrigued with this blend. Love Pinot and a big fan of Shiraz/Syrah.

Had a couple in my time, some reasonably average, but some really good. I think Medhurst YRB is my fav. I'd love to hear how the Saint & Scholar goes!

I enjoyed the 2019 Giant Steps Yarra Valley LDR Pinot Noir Syrah, although I'm worried about what's going to happen the Giant Steps with their new owners.

I do have and tried both actually. Incidentally they seem to use the same extremely heavy bottle (weighs just under 2kg) and using the same wax enclosure.

As to what I would buy to put away really depends on your preference. I thought The Thing was more on savoury side and in a hindsight I probably should have aired it a bit more. The Philosophy was more fruit driven/fruit upfront in a very tight manner. I preferred The Philosophy but will put The Thing away and will revisit in a couple of years time to see how it developed.

An observation, not a criticism....

Love the fact that there are actually some people kicking around who are nice, friendly and engaging.

Sometimes there's a fair bit of shade or negativity thrown around these threads - almost as if they have something to prove to someone.

I agree @Triumph57 , @olympicwiz is a helpful one - not to mention rather knowledgeable.

Peace, love and mung beans
