Vinomofo Wine Deals

Morning all,
I’m looking at this GSM
And signs point to d’Arenberg Ironstone Pressings. Any ideas?
Ironstone Pressings is matching on a lot of points here. So a safe bet I think, although I can't confirm. Can anyone see the Halliday score for this?

Confirmed as Ironstone Pressings 2017 by VM contact.

Hi guys, got this email from my VM broker

Just wanted to get in touch to give you exclusive access to a new mega premium, old-vine Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. We were lucky to get a string of sensational wines from this producer last year and now we are elated to finally get our hands on their very top, flagship Shiraz!

We have a very limited quantity of this wine, so let me know if you would like to jump on this deal ASAP before we sell out

BLACK MARKET OLD-VINE SHIRAZ 2018 (pre-arrival)

95 Points James Halliday

'5 Red Star Producer' Jame Halliday WIne Companion

9/10 James Halliday Vintage Rating (Barossa Valley)

A stunning Shiraz comprising the very finest parcels of fruit available. Small, concretrated berries are sourced from 80-100 year-old bush vines resulting in a wine of exceptional power and vigor.
This flagship Shiraz undergoes the royal treatment in the winery and is matured in 56% new French oak with the rest in American oak.

Expect a wine of immense power and opulence whilst remaining approachable and delicious in its youth, typical to the producer's style. Decadent and generous blue and black fruits are wrapped in mocha and baking spice. Tannins while young and structured are fine and supple leading to an impressively long finish.

Cellaring potential: 15+ years ( Decanting is recommended).

Down from $125 per bottle to just $50 in 6 packs.

This wine is expected to dispatch from our warehouse tomorrow

I suspect that it is Bethany GR Reserve Shiraz 2018

Never came across it - has any one had a pleasure (or otherwise) trying it?

Cheers

My Wine Guy and Langtons have had the 2016 and 2017 vintages of the Bethany GR Reserve @ $60-$65 (as mystery wines), it's a pretty good wine and I'd probably buy the 2018 at this price if it wasn't for the cork seal. The next level down Bethany LE has been on VM previously ($75->$35), moved to cork also in 2017, the 2018 may appear soon assuming this is the GR. The JH 95 pts is a match.

Thank you for your notes RB
I'm not a huge fan as some of the reds from South Australia in 2017, some/many are too lean and hard-edged for my preferences. I actually sent back the 2017 Bethany LE, partly because it was advertised as screwcapped and arrived under cork, but mostly as it wasn't as good (too lean and a little unripe tannins) as the 2016 (under screwcap) which I bought and very much enjoyed. I've found it easier to find reds I like from the 2018 vintage there, I'm not really looking for elegance in reds from Barossa and McLaren Vale.

I see what you mean re 2018 being a pretty warm year in Barossa. I did order a six pack and can confirm Bethany GR 2018. I am also getting my allocation of Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 2017 next week so would be interesting to compare

I stopped buying Rockford BP some years back, I find there are other wines I prefer at that price point or below now.

Opened a bottle of Haselgrove “The Lear” Shiraz 2019 I got from VM earlier this week. Originally I was planning to put it away for a few years as it is too young, but thought I better try it in case I need to return the pack.

it is a massive fruit driven wine. I let it breathe for a bit and it was changing with every sip as the time went by. It is just a baby but a very big boy that would definitely improve with age. But it was extremely enjoyable to drink now. Massive tannins almost to the point of bitterness precipitated and the wine became more balanced with time. All the traits of a classic big boutique McLaren shiraz and I must reluctantly admit it is probably just a tiny notch above the excellent Frank Earnest Shiraz but it is debatable. Definitely keeping it!
Traded my fortune shiraz for this after your review @olympicwiz. So happy I did - this wine will age beautifully. Thank you for the advice!

/I suspect this is Hollick Ravenswood but can't find anything on it, not even the Kim rating or any Vivino TNs.
Anyone tried?

@redbigot , I have never tried the Rockford BP before and almost bid a bottle at around $200 including the commission. In fact what is the fair price point do you think it is and what range of wine you think that is comparable to it? Thanks.

@AUew I first discovered Rockford back in 2005 when we did a Penfolds tasting tour (tasting Grange and other icons at their place in Barossa). We saw a big poster inside the Penfolds room classifying Barossa premium reds. As expected the ultra premium tier at the top was headed by 4 wines - Grange, Hill of Grace, Wolf Blass Platinum and Rockford basket press. Having never heard of Rockford we headed there for tasting after finishing the tour of Penfolds. I think back then a bottle was $45 and today it is sold there for $75 for their current 2017 vintage. They told me the philosophy of keeping the prices low for members is to allow common folks like myself to try quality wine similar to other Barossa greats without ruining our wallets. Outside the vineyard they were selling for upto 3-4x of the sticker price.

Back then you could only buy them in person at their premises in Barossa. Later they introduced the membership that currently allows you to buy 3 bottles of Basket Press a year for a current price of $75. I believe it was a close membership however they must have opened the books again as I just rejoined now by calling them.

There are no minimums, you just need to buy something and to show support to be on their list. I purchased a 12 case of their excellent Eden Valley Riesling ($25 a bottle), so next year I will get the entitlement to 3 2018 Basket press for $75 or close to it adjusted for inflation.

The other iconic wine there worthy of mentioning is Black Shiraz sparkling.

Not great of describing Basket Press, I will open a bottle soon and see how it goes. Not everyones fave, a close friend of mine passed me his 2017 allocation as he moved on from BP just like RB did.

For my taste - I hold on to my socks when I drink it!

@olympicwiz Thanks. I heard that they are selling by allocation at around $75 but I couldn’t get it at that price point. I feel guilty to pay high premium for a wine that I cannot normally get. For $200 in fact I can get a Mount Edelstone which I like so much.

I bought Rockford BP Shiraz regularly from 1988 vintage ($16.50) to 2005 ($50) and then again my last buy was the 2010 vintage @ $58. I sold at auction most of what I had when I stopped buying. The last one I tried at the winery was the 2016 @ $72 and I thought is was maybe a fair $50 wine compared to the other wines we tasted on that winery crawl.
On the Barossa part of that trip I bough Langmeil Orphan Bank Shiraz (at mates rates, but full price similar to BP), and wines from Cirillo, Rolf Binder and Izway. Other Barossa wines I've bought recently instead of BP include Tim Smith Shiraz and Reserve Shiraz, Spinifex Indigene, Kalleske, Teusner Big Jim and a few others.

Rockford is a good marketing exercise, at vintage time they have small trucks arriving at CD and people hand shoveling the grapes into the small old-fashioned winery next to the CD. People never see the real winery over the hill. At the rate they process the grapes through the little show setup it would take about 3 years to process each vintage.
