Cheers, boomed as its a blend I like (eg Blue Pole Allouran).
95 points from Bob Campbell to boot.

Raymond Chan rated it highly too - for what that's worth (allegedly wineries pay him for reviews). I think that Hawkes Bay is getting great results with Merlot dominated blends, and I was happy to take the chance on this one.

Raymond Chan charges a fee for wines to appear as "Featured Reviews". These are prioritised over non-fee samples and published differently.

Sam Kim I think charges a fee for all reviews.

There has been discussion on various wine-related forums over these two, but no real suggestion that they operate improperly.

Raymond Chan git it right IMO for this wine but I personally weight reviewers who charge for reviews a little lower on the (purely subjective) tielec01 journalist impact factor. It may not actually be a conflict of interest to be paid to review a wine, but it sort of looks a bit funny (although I appreciate being given wine is almost payment itself).

I'm hardly the first person to wonder about the practice - Update – winemaker criticises paid wine reviews

I agree.

Australian wine reviews and point scores in particular are a disgrace. Unmitigated BS. Try and find a published reviewfrom a major "critic" of a known winery's product that is disparaging. The number of 94+ point wines is farcicle. I don't pay any attention to reviews any more or at least point scores and anyone that charges a fee is by definition not impartial. We had a banking roayal Commission on this issue albeit in another industry but it's not that dissimilar.

Show me 20 random 94 point Australian wines accordining to Australian reviewers and I'll show you 15 ordinary wines that wouldn't rate >90 points internationally.

Any articles on ethics for quoting discount levels? According to the sites I found the RRP on this wine is $40NZ, which equates to $46AU. Where did VM get an RRP of $70 from?
Vinomofo and ethics. Very funny. They have been deliberately lying for many years.

You noticed that too, I usually comment on that sort of exaggeration when posting the identifications on my Forum.
But don't forget NZ doesn't have WET, so Aus prices (incl shipping etc.) will be a bit higher than NZ prices.

VM aren't the only ones that do it, but they are a bit of a stand-out leader in this regard and are sometimes aided and abetted by certain wineries.

Many of us have been routinely subtracting 3-5 points from Halliday scores for some years now. Halliday is probably the worst, Huon Hooke and the guys from TWF probably the best of the Aus bunch.

Tend to agree. Bob Campbell & NZ wine - deduct plenty.

Ray Jordan and WA wines...

I've seen instances for some big name wines where all of the above have scored a wine highly with Jeremy Oliver scoring the same wine substantially lower. Interestingly for me, I've tended to agree with JO on the scores. I worry some critics may also be scoring on "value" rather than quality.

JO is an odd one, I stopped following him after his third attempt at building a web site failed and I've not bothered to subscribe now it is working.

Differing scores from various critics are to be expected, a big difference could have many explanations, from the particular bottle of wine to "stylistic preferences" coming into play. Wine tasting, even by "experts" is a subjective process, the better ones are more consistent but none infallible.

The humbling of Robert Parker

I think Parker savaged his Quintet at some point, interesting to know whose opinion came out first!
Yes he did. I read a response from John Middleton to Parker's review (a long time ago) taking aim at Parker's stylistic liking for the big reds but there was some tension beforehand. Middleton didn't have much time for critics or the secondary market.

I have 'boomed' on the mixed case Black Market Mixed Case 46.0 - Mixed Case | Vinomofo Australia

As soon as it arrives I will post the contents.
AustPost conveniently left my delivery at the front door, where it sat for 4 hours on a warm afternoon. As a result I have had 'words' with the delivery centre who will pass on my concerns.

Anyway, that being said, this is what is within:

2017 Penley Estate Black Bull Cab Sauv
2015 Chateau Mauleon Syrah, Carignan, Grenache
2018 Gapsted Wines Sangiovese Rose
2017 Patrick Reisling
2015 Giesen Chardonnay
2015 Andevine Shiraz
2017 Solà Fred Carignan
2016 Alterum Shiraz
2017 Navarro Correas Malbec
2017 Castelle del Lago Pinot Grigio
2017 Pikes Sauv Blanc Sem.
2015 Rymill mc2 Cab Sauv

I'm not certain about that, the HRB is $35 via Hardys web site so I think VM would have used that price rather than $30. The Tintara matches for alcohol and Halliday score as well, but it's $27 via Hardys. Tatachilla "Drops on Tide" is also 14%, ~$30 and JH95 but not a 5 red star winery, so nothing matches 100% for me so far.

Hardy's Tintara Cabernet 2016 is a fairly good match: price ($30 RRP, $27 on Hardy's site), a/v, 5 red star "icon" winery, but has small amounts of other varieties (6% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 3% shiraz.)

The 95pt review on the WC site is listed as JH, but in the book it is from Jane Faulkner, matching the (non-JH) attribution by VM.

And the "$4 cheaper than best online price" aligns to what it is being sold for on cellarone. They did however have the Tintara Tinta Mole Touriga Grenache for $11 a while ago, and that was a good deal....
And I can confirm this is Tintara McLaren Vale Cabernet.
