Vinomofo Wine Deals

If anyone is considering the Mitolo Serpico Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 offered today, you might also want to consider the (obviously omitted) Halliday 85 pt review: "A bold throw of the dice that didn't succeed."

Seeing that JH loves his 90+'s, 85 is a shocker. Shame really as a 5yo cab sauv is always appreciated if it is decent.

I opened my fourth or fifth bottle of the Glenlofty last night, and finished it off tonight.
It's very strange, when freshly opened this wine is so complex, it is spicy, it has an amazing flavour. But on the second night it's quite flat, very plain, that spice and complexity dissapear.

In my short history with wines I have yet to come across one that seems to die so quickly.

So I bought another case, knowing to only open a bottle when I can drink the whole thing :)

Judging from your comments, I am GUESSING you are talking about the SHIRAZ only and possibly the 2013.

It doesn't sound like the nebbiolo.

Am I correct georgehall, having not done any due diligence on your old posts ! Sorry, no time.

Fair comment, Vedder50. It will be too peppery for some. Based on your excellent note of caution, I had made a tweak to the Vivino, Cellar Tracker and AFF tasting note to make this a bit clearer. Hopefully, the "big, warm white pepper and spice finish" will alert the less-pepper-is-more drinkers.

My rating does include value for money. If it's a great wine but over priced, then I tend to score it a tiny bit less (Grange, being a case in point). If it over delivers in its price bracket, then I will score it up. That happened here with a 0.2 leg up for value. If the tasting note space allows, I will mention I have done this. It's only a tiny difference, but I think it's merited here for me.

I have to agree mostly with your assessments Vedder and Wozza but I think you have the color wrong Woz. I reckon it's big warm black pepper not the white magic.

How can you tell - look for hints of pepper seeds in the bottom of the glass.

You think I am joking don't you - well, once every four years I think I can stretch the friendship and discuss the vagrancies of different coloured pepper tastes in wines. How would Stevie Wonder describe it though?

I do think the overtly peppery finish is certainly a major distraction at this early stage, so they are going to be laid down. While certainly not a bad wine, the earlier vintages are better at this stage.

By the way, did it make you sneeze?

I have had the 2011 Serpico before, such a shame that it turned out so poorly as the 2010 I had recently was much, much better! Picked it up for around the same as well. I payed $35 for it, which I was very happy to pay, would not pay more than $18 for the 2011 vintage, just a big old swing and a miss from a great producer sadly. I'm going to buy more of the 2010 just out of protest haha

2011 was a pretty tough wet vintage in South Australia. (Parts of) McLaren Vale and some producers with better vineyard management did better than most other areas. It seems they also dried the grapes on racks for a while to reduce moisture content and concentrate the flavours, Amarone style. Seems it didn't really work out.

Yeah, some areas in the McLaren Vale thrived though, it really depended on how high the vines were. Barossa took a massive hit mostly too. You have to be lucky to have had a good year in 2011 in SA in general

+1 Langtons has the 2011 vintage as the worst for 20+ years for some regions, and certainly (aside from Clare Valley Riesling) the scores are well down on average. Generally avoid anything 2011 unless you've seen follow-up reviews from people you trust saying it's good. There's plenty of 2010/2012 floating around these days to not have to worry about risking buying a 2011

Thanks Beefarmer. I will take a second look at the pepper tonight when having another glass or two. I won't be able to correct the AFF post (as it will be past the 24hr point), but I will update the Vivino and CT tasting notes if you are right - which I suspect you are. I'll even get the white and black pepper out as a control! My wife will think I have gone mad...!

Interesting you are putting these away. How long? I didn't think there was enough body in the wine to last more than 5 years. It was fairly thin in body, which is pretty normal at the cellar door price point we are talking. You have so much more experience than me, so I will be interested to hear your (and others) thoughts on this.

And no, it didn't make me sneeze!

Maybe more (or less) than you wanted to know about pepper in wine. https://www.awri.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/francis-W07pepper-AWITC15.pdf

From my limited experience (I would seldom cellar that style) of thin, peppery reds they have never really improved with age, and usually become less attractive, at least to my taste.

(long peppery finish - but my missus thinks it's too peppery).

Dear Wozza and beefarmer,
+1 says white pepper so in my house white it is.
Lovely wine by the way.

The native Tasmanian Mountain Pepper berry should not be forgotten - it has a little bit of background mint/menthol/eucalyptus

Pretty sure it would be the Tomich Hill Reserve Cardy 2015 Winemakers Reserve Chardonnay - Tomich Wines

I recall from a past post Tomich was linked to the 'masters of wine' description.

Tomich Hill aren't a 5 Star winery, and this was the previous ad for the reserve: https://vinomofo.com/wines/white-wine/black-market-deal-chardonnay-2015-120116 (Boutique Producer, Single vineyard etc.)

Edit: though the seem to claim they are a 5 Star winery on their website, and the 2015 Wine Companion has them at 5 Stars (I don't have the 2016 handy - maybe they got downgraded? or maybe the Wine Companion website is out of date)

The price discount matches the previous offer ($45 -> $13.50)
