Vinomofo Wine Deals

I think based on the above I might pass on this one :/ still a little scarred by my Mitolo (which i don't mind as a wine but don't like as a concept.)

I would be more apprehensive about the Shiraz Premium LineUp Case from the Boutique Producers - it's SO going to have two bottles of our current favourite in there (at $68 a bottle) ....!

[He says, making that wild assumption, and having not read the blurb on the 6 x 2 bottles the Case contains!]

Thanks Redbigot.

I haven't tried the Star Lane Shiraz, but, that description above is compelling, and, if it is as well made and packaged as the Star Lane Merlot the Fo recently sold me, then it should be a good deal.

The Merlot was definitely a good Aussie Merlot (if you like Merlot, which I know many don't). It was under cork, came in a fancy box with the wines laid down, and the wine was very up together (unlike another wine I won't mention that has been getting us all animated to various degrees).

If I hadn't put an order in on the WineMarket bubbles offer (see the DM and others thread), then I would be in the market for a fairly confident punt on this one ...

Hey Wozza, I got a 6-pack of the merlot as well - opened my first bottle last night. Mine was in the fancy box laid down as well, but mine was screw-cap rather than cork. Mine was the 2012 - was there a different one on offer? Interesting your one was under cork.

The wine itself is quite distinctive and not for everyone, but we enjoyed at our place.

The mitolo is quite an enigma isn't it. There has not been so much controversy about a VM offering since the Glenlofty SV. Decanted for 8hours, poured into my finest Villeroy and Bock, no Kay, and in the words of the late, great, Tony Greig, it's going Boch

Opened Mitolo #2 tonight with a couple of others, and dinner guests rate it. Had a glass myself and I still rate it far better than the $20 you'd find at DM. Certainly not the fruit bomb the Batch 187 was.

Edit: to clarify, my guests aren't wine experts (aka snobs) to any degree at all. They buy $20/bottles at LL/CM etc - so your usual Brokenwood/Penfolds/Wynns etc. They were quite impressed by what you can get for $20/bottle

Its quite a bit more drinkable on night two..

For mine, it seems an inoffensive drop - no sharp edges, not excessively fruity, tannins OK but again nothing special. Just a good all-rounder that can be used with friends where you're not sure what everyone likes

It's a pleasant quaffer.

So $20 not so far off the mark!
when I think FG and Glenlofty at about a tenner, I'll av harf

Now you have got me - I am not so sure on the cork... [maybe the wooden box and laying down led me to the wrong assumption on the cork - the rest are under the house, so not quite sure].

I came to the same conclusion: the Merlot will not be for everyone (unlike a good Aussie Shiraz or Cab Sauv). But I liked it too, once it had calmed down. I think it will cellar well under the right conditions as you can tell from the taste experience the wine was built to age well. And it will undoubtedly taste better when the fruit-bombiness (of the Merlot grape) calms down.

Re: Vinomofo Offer Helen and Joeys Layla Pint Noir 2013

Hi all Pinophiles. I note that this wine has been offered for some time.I have searched for opinions or reviews with only limited success. I think Beefarmer commented favourably in a post some time ago.
Any comments to assist my purchasing decision would be appreciated. In their VM price ranges, I have recently enjoyed the Duck Sauce 2014 and the Riposte En Garde. A well cellared 1997 Mt Mary Pinot was developed, but drinking beautifully. It confirmed the longevity potential of some Oz pinots. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
84/100 from wine front.

Tanny15 and Beefarmer (to name the more recent posts) have given some fairly positive, but qualified opinions, on the Mitolo Cantiniere. I did too last week.

It's fine for the $20 odd price paid (although some might argue - it should be cheaper - given the excellent F&H and FG wines recently sold through the Fo for under a Tenner a bottle).

My biggest problem with Mitolo Gate was the $68 RRP price, the flagship tag and the delay (during which time a new web page was put up on the wine, which may have been - I am not saying it was - a defensive position because of the obvious questionmarks Fo customers were raising). There was an insinuation this was going to be bigger and better than it was, when in fact it turned out to be a pleasant, light mid-week drinking Shiraz. I could taste the more sweeter elements - the coconuts, etc - but they were standing out against the more meatier tastes too. It wasn't totally polished and coherent, hence why I politely said it was a bit funky.

I am keeping the remaining 5 bottles, but I must admit I am going to be very careful in the future over what I purchase from the Fo. I have lost a little bit of confidence in them, but I am sure the Fo will come back with some excellent offers to restore that confidence.

Here's hoping ...

Well this is my problem.....I didn't want a mid week red and fell for the flagship and RRP and premium tags..
as I said looks like mine will be going back without even tasting on principle alone

hang on ..ill might just keep one bottle for the stuffing around ...lol

Mine is going back, had better wine for half the price from the Fo...

If it was $10-$12 bottle then I'd be more likely to keep it, but this one has been one big disappointment to be honest.

All hype, no substance

So $20 not so far off the mark!

If you compare it to what you get for $20 at DM etc. I think it is good value. If you judge it against all the best deals you can get everywhere else it's still OK. But that all comes down to how much you value your own time. For me, I don't have hours to save a couple of bucks here or there to get the perfect wine (despite my posting frequency here might indicate otherwise :))

I hope Beefarmer doesn't see that. He will be most upset!
. Going back to my school days, anything above 51 was a pass......so at 84, it's good. Seriously, it does show the different taste worlds we inhabit. JH may have given it a 94, but that was probably after he drank all the four glasses available for testing.

But seriously is it really a 100 point scale, when was the last time you saw anything below 50! Personally about 79 is the lowest I've seen, going back to your school days you would also remember scaling, so if it's really a 75 - 100 points scale then 84 would scale at about 36 in real terms, which was never a pass when I was at school!

Hm .. wonder what they do with the well travelled rejects ??
. Salvaaaaaaation it's the case, some of them are pure disgrace. It don't matter about quality, drinking three will still get you of your face. Don't matter if they're a tenner or a twenty, after mitolo returns will be a plenty. So save your dollars for that eventual day,
Because salvation gives you the wine that others don't wanna pay.
