Very short Cathay Pacific Transit at Hong Kong airport

I have a flight booking via Cathay travelling from MAD to MEL transit via Hong Kong , with a 50 mins layover. Am i crazy or is this something doable for a home hub ?
The other thing to remember is that as you are departing from the EU, EU261 applies.

So if the inbound is late and you miss your connection you may be entitled to €600. You’ll also be entitled, regardless of the reason for the delay, to accommodation and meals appropriate to the length of the delay.

Yes, if you’re at the physical airport the screens are as good as it gets. But if you’re inbound on a plane, getting realtime info is harder.

The website seems to lag the onsite displays.
No. There's connecting gates from your PTV which you can refer that to check which gate(s) to go to for your next service.

6 hours you would wait at the airport in the lounge
If 6 hours, I would suggest you can catch an Uber to Tuen Mun Town Plaza (which is only 15 minutes away) and enjoy material freedom, such as Don Don Donki, Aeon, CitiStore for awesome Hong Kong and Japanese snacks.

But does a transit fare include the cost of leaving the airport and re-entering? Beware your onward ticket not being valid if you do this… it may have been some years but I’ve heard of that happening

Interested to know this too ! Why would it not ??
Cost of customs, immigration - twice… not something a transit would have included in the price. I was planning a transit via HKG just a couple of years ago and figured why not pop in for 2 nights, the fare went up AU$100 but worth it for sure. My other example is someone who should have known better leaving HKG airport to the city to sleep between flights… got back and was told her onward ticket was now invalid. As flight crew for a partner airline they soon gave her a free onward segment, but well she should have known better

It’s fine, in fact the government will refund taxes in two tickets if you are in transit (even though you’re not technically supposed to ‘enter’ Hong Kong).

i have been entering HKG on through (transit only) tickets since at least 2007 and it’s never been an issue, or even mentioned.

Thailand used to catch pax entering the country during transit but not having paid the departure tax.

@the8guy looks like you are good to go in, enjoy

Most of the time, but only displays usually within about 30 mins of landing and isn’t always complete (didn’t show my connection this week but we had a longish layover).

Also, it doesn’t always tell you what gate you’re arriving at - that’s equally important in planning - if you know that sometimes it’s better to go the opposite direction as most people and head towards a secondary screening point or at least W1 if you’re heading to the Pier or Bridge lounges.

I have just had an accidental short transit transfer at HKG. I was booked om CX124/903 MEL-HKG-MNL which has a nominal transit time of 1h45m, and is often longer due to early arrival of CX134. In my case however, CX134 pushed back on time at about 0730, but almost immediately had to return to the gate due to unspecified engineering issues. We did not get away until round 0930, which pretty well eliminated any change of connecting with CX903 on time.

Sure enough, during the flight I received an email advising that my flight to MNL had been changed to CX913, leaving about 4 hours later, However, I then received another email this time telling me I was back on CX903, leaving me wondering was going on!

Closer to arrival when the IFE began showing transfer info, it showed the CX903 departure moved back by 40 mins, leaving a transfer time of just under 60 mins.

When we arrived at HKG there was a CX person at the gate waving a "CX903" sign waylaying all the affected pax (about 10); we were all then escorted through the transfer point using the "priority lane" and got to our gate with time to spare. (It was gate 63, which gave me a chance to drop into the Pier F lounge for a few drinkies!) , we eventually reached MNL only about 15 mins late.

My checked bag was not so lucky, and was loaded onto the CX913 flight later, but this was handled well and it was delivered to me the next morning.

So the moral seems to be, short transits do seem to be handled quite well at the end of the day!
