Just off ABC feed: Breaking news: Ambulance crews called to Melbourne Airport to treat a number of passengers for turbulence-related injuries. More to come.

Anyone in MEL right now. Wassup?

Turbulence, ambulances, MEL

Didn't see anything, had a quick look around...!

With any luck it's the no news corp Lear jet :p

yes, news.com.au has its report:
A COMBINATION of food poisoning and turbulence resulted in a number of injuries on a Melbourne-bound flight this morning.

Ambulance crews were called to attend the arrival of V Australia Flight VA20 from coughet in Thailand as it landed at Tullamarine at 7.40am.

I have edited the thread title to reflect the situation as it unfolds.

Re: Turbulence, ambulances, MEL

I hesitate to draw any conclusions until we know all the facts but this sounds like a combination of a couple of things joining up.
The turbulence issue could well have been a case of just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, may even have been clear air turbulence but sounds nasty nonetheless, the food poisoning issue is different, the report says that one passenger was suffering food poisoning,I would hazard a guess that the passenger ate something dodgy in coughet before the flight left and the symptoms only manifested themselves later, this, combined with the turbulence meant other passengers started to feel ill and things went from there.

Cheers

+1, the food poisoning issue is unlikely to be the fault of the airline. When are people going to realise eating Salad is not a smart thing in Asia and many other places!

That would indeed seem to be logical. It is most unlikely a case of food poisoning due to the in-flight meal would manifest itself so quickly during the flight. The combination of un upset tummy and turbulence would not be pleasant and likely quite conducive to the contents of ones stomach deciding to ... (well, you get the picture).

The reported FA injuries were obviously not considered serious enough for the captain to divert the flight to seek medical assistance.

So far the reporting of this incident seems to be fairly balanced, unemotional and factual (as far as anyone really knows the facts at this time).

You don't make friends with salad;)

I am sure Qantas is to blame ;)

Amazing how the headline changes too - with QF it is 'emergency' and 'plunge', with another carrier is it much different

Unlikely correct, but not impossible.

Virgin and chicken don't have the best relationship... cough listeria round 2 maybe? ;)

Some of the comments in the News.com.au story are quite funny..

Maybe Qantas did the catering

They may try and say it was turbulence but something was wrong. We weren't just going down. The plane was nosediving."

Why no news even quotes people like this, let alone publishes them is rubbish.

For what its worth, Virgin had a much, much more serious issue less than an hour ago with a military aircraft. Wonder if it will even make the news?

"I'll be honest, I s--- my pants," Ms Baghdassarian said.
"They may try and say it was turbulence but something was wrong. We weren't just going down. The plane was nosediving."
Ms Baghdassarian said she was forced to hold her children in their seats to stop them flying out.
What a lady.Maybe she had food poisoning too.
Obviously didn't pay attention to the safety video.
In the article it also says-
Passenger Shelley Read said the horror turbulence struck about two hours into the flight.
She said stewards were serving food when one was thrown about one foot into the air.
"The trolleys fell on top of the air host, he was pouring my drink and it went everywhere," she said.
"The plane was covered with food.
Now if they hadnt finished the meal service then how could the paramedic diagnose food poisoning after that episode of turbulence unless the pax already knew he/she had food poisoning and the shaking just stirred things up.Certainly blaming VA for the food poisoning as some of the comments do is totally unjustified.
And now time for you all to fess up-how many of the QF jokes in the comments were made by AFFers?:p

Do tell... Did they try and steal food for their onboard catering and get caught? ;)

I'm guessing it was with an E jet ex Newcastle that was broken down, engineers flew on the same flight as me today. The boys with the F toys were taking off in pairs at Williamtown so maybe...?
