Use of OOL by NSW residents to access NNSW

Queensland could hire a militia made-up of out-of-work members of the Fishers & Shooters party, to line a Safe Corridor between the OOL (no P in it) and the state border with armed personnel ... keeping an eye out for attempted break-outs by potential COVID zombies.

I don’t think you understand the role of the federal government with respects to aviation, and I’m not here to educate you,
You're not talking about aviation, you're talking about people using a land crossing on a state border. The role of the federal (should that be commonwealth) government with respect to aviation doesn't have much obvious relevance to land transport. It must be an obscure relationship between a role for aviation that applies to land transport. Perhaps trying to make your case would help.

Surely it’s not about Byron, it is already served without the complexity of crossing state borders by a 30min closer airport at Ballina.

I guess places like Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah are closer to OOL. But for Pete’s sake, it’s probably only a few more months and both are still only an hour from BNK, big chunks of Melbourne and Sydney, and most of country Victoria (including Ballarat, Shepparton and right now Bendigo and Geelong as well) survive being an hour or more from an airport.
Sure, I'm sure it's much more than Byron. However, the timing of the post is remarkably close to the SMH being full of stories about Sydney-siders taking their annual pilgrimage to Byron.
Apologies for the creative licence on my part.

Don’t lol I’m so embarrassed to be a Queenslander these days!

The southern end of the runway and two gates are in NSW, the rest of the airport infrastructure (and the most imporant part, the terminal) are in QLD.

Non-residents of QLD with a border pass couldn't legally use the pass to drive to OOL unless they worked there.

It's not practical to build an entry/exit into NSW because 1. That would probably take longer to build than the border restrictions are in place and 2. Passengers would need to check-in in QLD, board planes in QLD (except for the two gates in NSW), collect hire cars in QLD or meet transport services to NSW in QLD.

Perhaps for the upcoming school holidays NSW and Vic residents stay in their states then come up here for the next ones?

Well I am. Airports are federal assets, for the use of all of us (for example, no International flights out of Hobart, very few out of some states, so our system relies on free access to major hubs like SYD & MEL). In this case OOL is an asset that is shared between Gold Coast & NNSW (in fact BNE is just as convenient for northern parts of the Gold Coast whereas OOL is the only major airport for NNSW if we class BNK as a non-major/regional airport).

Queensland has made a decision to restrict access to their state, but as a consequence NSW loses access to this federal asset due to a very small segment of road going through QLD (it really makes no difference where the border goes within the airport precinct because once inside it's all federal land - the question is whether NSW can access the federal land directly (through a crash gate etc) or (more likely) if Queensland just says it's OK for NSW travellers to transit QLD to go to the airport without a border pass.

As above for the irrelevance of where certain airport facilities are located within the precinct - it's all federal land so it doesn't matter. If you helicopter into OOL you don't need a border pass. The question is whether NSW residents can get to airport land either without driving through Queensland or (more likely) under a "Free transit" arrangement where they don't police that stretch of land.

Queensland is only hurting itself - specifically its tourist industry. I am going for a holiday in Kingscliff in a few weeks and I would have gone to the Gold Coast but I'll make do with Kingscliff. I would have flown too but it's too difficult so I'll just drive. Money that I would have been happy to spend to prop up the tourism industry and airlines. I hope at least the NSW tourism industry gets a nice kick from 01 June. I feel sorry for Queensland businesses. So unnecessary.

There’s no entry to the airport from NSW. And if you helicoptered into OOL you would have to quarantine for 14 days.

OOL is leased from the federal government but it’s still in QLD and QLD rules apply.

I think it’s a good thing the borders are still closed for now, best to wait and see how NSW and Vic fare.

There’s no public entry point. There are crash gates on the NSW side.

No you do not need to quarantine if you arrive at OOL by air - if you are transferring to another flight. Isolation only applies if you leave the airport. This is more or less standard across the country as the states have no legal authority until passengers leave federal land and enter the respective state.

You‘re entitled to your own opinion. My point is OOL is shared between both states and thus NSW should have access to it even if Anna wants to play silly buggers with it.

Just out of interest if you're holidaying in Kingscliff and just flying into OOL how was anyone in Qld benefiting?

By you driving, small NSW communities that you pass through if you take breaks for snacks might get some benefit. By flying just Kingscliff will be getting your cash. Oh, plus QF.

My family all live on the GC - my very elderly parents, my brother and his family and my sister who has a carers border pass, at Banora Point. I don't want any of them at risk by Qld opening our borders just yet. It's going to happen and I'm pretty sure it won't be September.

There's no gate into NSW. We (it's not just Anna so you don't need to keep singling her out) don't want people crossing our border yet. It is what it is and it's not going to change.

I would have gone to Queensland, not Kingscliff. They’re obviously not benefiting.

There absolutely are crash gates.

Queensland polls indicate otherwise. It’s ridiculous because Queensland residents can enter NSW and return to Queensland without isolation. What’s the difference? I live in Newcastle and we’ve been case free for a month, we are safer than Brisbane.

You can't come here, them's the facts, just like you can't go to Tassie, or SA, or WA or the NT. NSW residents can come here if they have a valid reason but having a holiday isn't one of them. I'm sure plenty are bullshitting at the border and getting let through but that's just the nature of entitlement. Yes, we can travel to NSW but we are expected to self isolate when we return.

Feel free to crash through the gates and good luck.

Poll the right people and the desired result is always possible. News is a master at it. Our neighbours on one side can't understand why they haven't been able to go camping since the day the emergency was declared. Our two neighbours on the other side are happy for the borders, and the country, to be closed as long as there are active cases. That verifiable poll indicates that 66% of Qld people believe that Anna is correct. Anecdotally, of course, neither of us have spoken to anyone here who wants anything here relaxed yet.

I feel like you have missed the point, you are the exact person that the Queensland Government is trying to keep out. The person who has no real reason to come to queensland, but would anyway just for a visit.

I get the fact that this time is difficult for businesses, but try asking any of those business owners if they would prefer for the business, or their loved ones to stay alive and Im fairly confident I know the answer.

Currently "Only Queensland residents, residents of border communities undertaking essential activities and those considered an ‘exempt person’ are allowed to enter Queensland via air, sea, rail or road from another State or Territory. " So you're correct that you don't need to quarantine, but that's because you wouldn't be allowed into the state for the purpsoe of tourism, including flying to OOL then going to northern NSW.

Also OOL is owned and operated by Queensland Airports Limited. It's not a joint venture between QLD and NSW, so QLD rules apply. During daylight saving, it's still on QLD time too.

I understand you're put out by not being able to come to QLD to holiday, but I'd rather you be put out than anyone on the GC be put at risk by a potential Covid case.

So if you're travelling to Northern NSW why would you arrive by air into OOL and then transit to another flight? Are there commericial flights from OOL to Northern NSW? Why wouldn't you just fly direct to the final airport in Northern NSW?

In terms of the land, the airport land is completely separate to both NSW and QLD. This is the fundamental fact of commonwealth land, it is NOT state land. Qld built the road access to the airport. If NSW want I'm sure they can always build a road as well.

Wow 34 posts to argue over something that is discretionary on behalf of potential users, is temporary, effects very few, has alternatives, and likely to be resolved naturally within a few weeks. Guess it fills in the day ;)

More likely to point out the numerous flaws in a thought bubble than seems to be almost entirely motivated by politics. (Who is this Anna? Plus the usual NSW bashing of QLD politics). What about every other state that has closed the borders? The OP doesn't seem to have as much concern with those other states.

As you say an issue that is likely to resolve about the time the have the final construction plans.

Also shows how some people in NSW and Victoria think, that just because they like to holiday in QLD means that QLD has to bow down to them. And Anna's quip to Gladys last week about not being lectured to was brilliant.

.....as long as you don't tar all Victorians with the same brush. I'm keen to go visit grandkids in QLD but quite prepared to wait until the borders are opened.

Not at all. I had to cancel a trip to NSW at Easter to visit family and am now waiting until November, so I get it.

I'm sorry I am a Queenslander and I don't support the closing of the border. There is no medical reason for it.That is the opinion of an expert in the field the deputy Commonwealth CMO who is a world renown epidemiologist.Yesterday an Adelaide professor of virology came out in support.Aren't we meant to believe the science?
In the last 2 months of lockdown QLD tourism is estimated to have lost $9 billion. If the border is closed until September there is another $18 billion lost.Tourism businesses will be decimated. So definitely not all business is supporting the closure.
