For new members, are you able to buy DMs straightaway? Or is there some form of minimum waiting period?

12 days before,you can buy.

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

Just tried to make my booking, which is Australia to North America through Japan and was told once I got to the destination flight (New Orleans) that I was over the MPM, and the agent basically said outright that you can't do flights through North Asia to North America. So that's... wrong.

EDIT: And then I call back, and after some initial hesitation, it's valid! Yay!

So what's happening in NOLA that time of year?

I *thought* it was early for JazzFest :)

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

Does anyone know if US DM get a bit tight when it comes to North American stopovers?

Example: South Pacific (Australia) to North America redemption. Destination Havana, en route stopover in Vancouver. Any problems with that?

What about North American transits? I know that AA has a rule that a transit is considered to be anything < 24 hours outside North America but inside North America it's < 4 hours.

Depending on the MPM for Australia to Havana, I suppose the only thing that may be an impediment is TPAC availability and/or the MPM (if routing via Asia)...

can USDM issue an award to Cuba?

I very much doubt it but you can use Avianca Liifemiles to book on Copa. I have booked Sju- Pty- Hav return in J for next year.

We had a 12 hour stopover in Vancouver, no problems with that (NYC - SYD). Not sure on the other but given I think your options to get to Havana are limited you are probably OK.

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

I searched everywhere on the site but couldn't find it, does anyone know what the maximum number of miles that can be bought per calendar year is? :)
Irrespective of bonus, that is...

My understanding is no limit on number of miles purchased in a calendar year.
They have a limit on promos, for example there is a promo now where you can buy 50+50, that is the maximum amount of miles you can buy IN THIS PROMO.
The next promo you can still buy upto the limit for that promo.
And outside of promos you can still purchase miles if required.

Happy to be corrected if wrong but I looked into it a fair bit and that is my understanding.

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

Hi all,
I'm new to USDM, i want to buy the 50000+50000 miles.
However when trying to check for a reward booking i simply cant find anything online, also Is it me or does the only airport available to fly from in oz Darwin.
I'm sure i'm doing something wrong but not used to booking with USDM.

If its actually a thing i cant fly from oz now for some reason i wont be buying these miles.

Thanks all

the us airways booking tool does not handle international airline partner flights. you need to search for availability on something like united airlines, and then call us airways in the usa to make your booking.

Ah ok, Thanks MEL_Traveller
So when you say to look for availability with say United do you mean check award availability with United's FF program?

Thanks

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

To the best of my knowledge, you have never been able to book on-line with US for USDM redemptions from Australia however the call centre is normally pretty good.

There are quite a few other ways of checking availability online, including ANA, Awardtravelr and ExpertFlyer.

yes... go to united.com and go to 'search with award miles'. you can also use awardtravelr.com. the ANA booking tool has the most accurate award availability, but for easiest use it requires you to have a positive mileage balance. in most cases I will look for availability via united (look under the 'award saver' column when it gives you the results, those are the ones bookable by partner airlines), then confirm via ANA.

Great, thanks for the replies, makes sense to me now ;)

Thanks for that Flashback; I see it's one of our resident madmen, and as it seems, a turned hard nut. Looks like I just have to keep calling UA (the operator) until someone speaks up, though how do you convince an airline who can't seem to modify a ticket (because they didn't write it in the first place) to take action (I assume they are not entirely powerless).

shanye's booking was a one way, and I think through lifemiles... which generally has better access to premium carrier first and business class. I don't know whether that made any difference. I know this was not a case of irrops, but generally when it comes down to irrops UA is extremely proactive in getting you to your destination, even routing on other alliances if need be. maybe they pulled the same strings here.
