Upgrade to Premium Economy on JAL from Australia to Japan for $450

Has anyone tried requesting an upgrade to Premium Economy at the airport on Japan Airlines?

According to their website, upgrades are available on the day of the flight, subject to availability, for a fixed price of AUD450 from Australia to Japan or JPY40,000 in the other direction.

Fixed-price last minute upgrades are also available on other JAL routes and the prices seem reasonable.

I've tried a request to J at a lounge last year in HND for the HND-SYD leg and was denied. They had the list of upgrades available for purchase at the lounge entry. That was on a JL issued PE ticket (but travelling in Y because the aircraft had two classes only).
But it sure is worth asking. A very modest price for a good uptick in comfort and service (well, in JL the service even in Y is usually great, to start with).

No, but I intend to try soon on a Japan-Australia leg. I'm curious if they will allow for a booking to be split and upgraded, or if all pax on the booking must be upgraded at once.
