I need your help/guidance

Its been a long time since l was in this place. due to illness and change of location my gold status has reduced to bronze over the last 3 years.
Have not flown QF or infact any airline in that time. so am not up to date.

I have booked a paid econ flex ticket Tsv-Bne-Syd and return. depart March 30, return April 1st

Tsv-Bne QF 967
Bne-Syd 529

Syd-Bne 544
Bne-Tsv 978

I have requested upgrades on all legs using points and Qf 967 down and 978 back were approved straight away no probs. cost 7500 points for each.
However 529 and 544 were not and had the message no upgrade seats avail put on waitlist and we we get back to you.

so my questions are
are these 2 flights likely to upgrade and if so when.
what can l do to maximize my chances. Should l phone qf

Is there another way to upgrade.

The reason for my dismay is that both flights down and back are now broken.
At least in Townsville l can book luggage trough on J on check in

But coming back it looks like check in and luggage will be econ to Bne therefore luggage econ to Tsv
So no lounge in Syd.

I am a bit disheartened that l have now wasted points on these upgrades as its now a dogs breakfast.
to make maters worse l am still holding 586,000 points.

Thanks for reading
any help or advice appreciated.

Easter Holidays so the BNE-SYD-BNE legs will no doubt be very popular, more so then the TSV-BNE-TSV ones, hence your upgrades for BNE and SYD will have to wait till last minute unfortunately. Remember you dont have any status so your request will come after a lot of others so be prepared for economy for these legs.

I dont think its a waste of points as the longer flights have been succesful so look at it from that point of view.

BTW having your bags stamped priority usually means they will come out last :)

I wouldn't fret overly. I believe they are points well spent and fingers crossed the other two come through for you as well.
In the past I've flown Y out of Canberra and connected to J in Syd and had my bags tagged priority at check-in. Even though personally I feel it is barely a token gesture you may find that at your Syd check-in the bags will be tagged priority.

Enjoy your trip. :)

Your BNE-SYD flight currently has at least 5 seats left in business, and your SYD-BNE flight has at least 4 seats left.

The upgrades will come through if award availability in business is released for the flights. So, keep monitoring the business reward seats. If a seat becomes available, cancel and re-request your upgrade for that flight. It will be confirmed on the spot.

Also, if you're happy to change your flight from SYD-BNE to QF540, which leaves an hour earlier, there are currently business class award seats available on this flight. My advice would be to change to this flight and then re-submit your upgrade request. ;)

You might get the chance to pay $ for the J class, they do say that they do email you if your class is eligible.
With that much points, I would have used a P+P, granted its not an economical way of using points, but you have so much, and it could have worked that you would know you get/got J class at the time of booking.
If I had so much QFF points as you, I would have used P+P for some sector.

Sorry I have a random question on this line -- I've not done much in the way of points upgrades on QF.
Are there some situations that upgrade requests will get approved straight away? Another post suggested it could have to do with business award seat availability?

- I have a flight booked in economy to WLG for which there are award business seats available- I've put in a request but it's still a request, right?

For QF domestic flights, upgrade requests will be confirmed immediately if a reward seat is available. Upgrades & awards come from the same inventory.

It works differently though for international flights. Awards and upgrades work separately in this case. You'll only be notified of the outcome a few days before the flight.

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification :)

Not sweating it too badly as it's only a short hop but I have plenty of points so thought I'd throw my hat in the ring.
Dinner and drinks in the FLounge first will be enough to get me through to Wellington haha

Regarding lounge access on your outbound journey TSV/BNE/SYD, if the upgrades haven't cleared BNE/SYD by the time you travel I would show your J boarding pass TSV/BNE to the J Lounge in BNE and see if they'll let you in on that but definitely tell them you're waiting to hear about the J upgrade BNE/SYD.

Similarly on the return journey if the SYD/BNE J waitlist hasn't cleared on the day of travel show your J boarding pass to the J Lounge at SYD and ask if you can get access on the basis that your connecting flight BNE/TSV is in J. You could also enquire then if the SYD/BNE upgrade has cleared.

When you do domestic upgrade requests online does the system give you the option to upgrade on the day at the airport as it does for international upgrade requests? Sometimes the box is easy to miss so people don't check it and could miss out on the opportunity to get the upgrade at the airport if it hasn't already cleared ahead of time.

The upgrades will come through if award availability in business is released for the flights. So, keep monitoring the business reward seats. If a seat becomes available, cancel and re-request your upgrade for that flight. It will be confirmed on the spot.

If U class is released, your upgrade should clear. If it doesn't, don't cancel - just phone the Service Centre and ask about it, because it is a known issue that sometimes the waitlist upgrade doesn't clear properly. They can see it, and if it hasn't worked and you call, they will push it through.

Points upgrade requests are processed before "bid for upgrade" requests, so not terribly relevant in this situation

With that much points, I would have used a P+P, granted its not an economical way of using points, but you have so much, and it could have worked that you would know you get/got J class at the time of booking.
If I had so much QFF points as you, I would have used P+P for some sector.

In this situation I actually agree with the pooch. If you have a metric boatload of points, and it's that important to you, why not "change" the sectors not upgraded to J, and pay the difference in points? It won't be cheap, but you'd have more than enough and ensure you get J for those short sectors.

Although just realised the bookings are TSV-SYD r/t so that would cost more, but you could do it, get the upgrades approved returned (points wise) and have J. if it's really that important to you

As suggested earlier, given waitlist, if it has not cleared when you check in/get to the lounge you can simply point out you're on the waitlist and your first (TSV-BNE or next BNE-TSV) is upgraded.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
