Hi All.

I am on a dodgy internet connection (dial up) so cannot post in any length but my upgrade did come through. It was well worth the point deduction in my humble opinion. I was only going to be in Syd for a week before going back to the UK and the thought of flying economy and then turning around was not pleasant.

I think the most enjoyable part of the trip was the extra leg room. The IFE was not the best but the leg room more than made up for it. I was quite content to just sit there and stretch my legs!

The ability to grab a quick shower in BKK and Syd (as I had to transit domestically) was also a major plus! The lounge in BKK is quite impressive IMVHO. All in all a good experience.

I head back tomorrow and I have a question about upgrading but I will post a new topic shortly.

Thanks again to all for your wonderful advice and tips. I very much hope to continue to contribute to the board and share my experiences.

Actually, row 16 can often become available in such circumstances. Only a QF Platinum member (which includes CL members) can pre-allocate the exit row.

This is conflicting news. I am a Platinum member and have been reliably informed that you can no longer get pre-allocation for an exit row seat, it can only be a request put forward and there are no guarantees it will occur. I have been told/reminded as recently as yesterday when contacting QF that they can only request a exit row for me and not allocate a seat there so I managed to get great bulkhead seats for my sectors.

I have also learned that if you manage to get a good bulkhead seat but still requested an exit row, and then get allocated the exit row do not try to ask for the bulk head back, it ain't always possible to get it again I found out. I am very specific now on my seat requests and ensure if I am happy with them I do not request exit rows anymore.

Anyway the point is I am sure you cannot get a confirmed exit row anymore.

I don't think this is any different to how it has always been. You call QF and "request" an exit row seat. The agent informs you that she cannot pre-select an exit row seat for you, but can send off a request to the seating department. This request is sent off for consideration. Sometimes the response returns before your phone call has finished and the agent can tell you which seat is now showing against your booking. Other times it can take a day or even longer for the reply to be returned and your seat selection to be updated in the booking.

You are always reminded that seating requests (whether for exit row, bulkhead or seats 98L) are a request and not confirmed or guaranteed seat allocations. We often use the perm "pre-allocated" here, which is technically not correct. But a Platinum member can request an exit row seat, that request will be considered and in many cases will be "assigned" with the passenger being informed that its just a request and not guaranteed and that seat assignments can change, yada, yada, yada.
Anyway the point is I am sure you cannot get a confirmed exit row anymore.
No seats, whether exit row or otherwise, are confirmed until you check-in and are presented the boarding pass. And even then they can be changed before you actually board the aircraft. I don't believe there has been any changes to this policy in recent times.

Since becoming Platinum I have asked QF to put a request in the system for an exit row aisle seat. The request was processed while I was on the phone but within a couple of hours the booking was changed to reflect an exit row aisle seat allocation. Seat allocations are never guaranteed, as I found last June, and excluding op-ups I have managed to keep my original seat allocation on most of my flights.

For international flights, WP and CL can make a request for a request to be submitted to 'seating'.

If the request is granted this should appear on www.checkmytrip.com within a few business hours.

Not all agents are aware of this. That's why it's best to ask this of "Qantas premium". (Call Business Hours and Sat Mornings and input your WP number - hopefully it will be answered ""Qantas premium".)

FWIW, This week I have made such a request for exit aisle seat on no less than 4 occasions; most recently yesterday.

  • ALL have been granted.
  • I can see my preallocated exit aisle seats on www.checkmytrip.com for all four flights.

NO upgrade love on my trip LHR-SIN today. Flight was chockers. I was lucky and got 40A in Y so I was pretty happy with the divder and forward of the lavs. Trip was OK but for some reason I couldn't sleep at all on the flight.
Got some reasonable shots out the window of an SG A380 flying along side us about an hour out from SIN and will post next week. It was quite a sight as I had never seen a 380 before and it was quite close.

It looks better for this sunday evening SIN-MEl though at this stage. so fingers crossed.
