Apologies if this has been answered previously - I'm FF Gold (soon to be Platinum) and looking to travel SYD - SFO in May in Premium Economy with the view to do a points upgrade to J.

Just wondering if I have a better chance of an upgrade in booking a Premium Economy cash fare vs Premium Economy Classic Reward fare (I have plenty of points so that is isn't issue)?

I assume that the classic reward fare is lower down the pecking order when it comes to upgrade approval?

Any insights would be much appreciated :) Thank you.

Will you be Platinum before May? If the flight you're after has decent availability in I class, I'd wait until you tick over 1400SC and then request the award. Will be a much better use of points, and a surefire way to fly J (assuming QF release it)

Yes I should be Platinum by mid-March, all going to plan.
That might be a better way to go - will Qantas generally release a reward seat if there is cabin availability?
