UA99, the Monday 4 February 2019 MEL - LAX timetabled to depart at 1125 hours has been altered to a 1350 hours. Not sure why as the inbound is about 12 minute early at this stage.

UA98 from LAX to MEL (B789 N24972) is expected to arrive on Tuesday 5 February 2019 at about 1010 hours, 45 late.

Thursday 7 February 2019 sees UA98 from LAX to MEL (B789 N26960) arriving at a predicted 1009 hours, 44 minutes tardy.

UA98, the LAX - MEL (B789 N26960) is showing as arriving MEL at 1013, 48 minutes late on Saturday 9 February but at about 0943 when near Adaminaby, NSW it altered course and looks suspiciously like it is diverting to SYD. Low on fuel? Medical?

UPDATE: UA98 should arrive in SYD at 1021 hours.

Google Flights laughingly suggests UA99, the 9 February 1125 hours MEL - LAX 'is delayed 26 minutes.'

FlightAware is accurate, suggesting that the eastbound has been cancelled.

One difficulty for UA may be that its flight crew on UA98 might be out of hours if they later continued down to MEL ex SYD. Not as if this airline has standby crew in Oz.

On Thursday 14 February, the SFO - SYD UA863 arrived at 1004 hours, 59 late with B789 N26960, which must run to Australia a lot as it feature in the previous post re a Melbourne flight.

On Saturday 16 February 2019, UA98 from LAX to MEL should arrive at 1052, 87 minutes late with B789 N26958. This will delay returning flight UA99 until about 1225 in its pushback, an hour late.

N26970 on UA863 from SFO to SYD was similar, arriving at about 1040 hours, 95 late.

Sunday 17 February should see UA98 from LAX to MEL arriving at 1018 hours, 53 late with B789 N24973.

N27959 on UA839 (LAX - SYD) is closely following with its Sunday arrival suggested as 0930, 40 down.

On Monday 18 February 2019, the 1125 hours MEL - LAX (UA99, B789 N16966) was at 1355 still taxiing for takeoff, so it will be more than two hours late arriving.

Monday 4 March 2019 has UA98 (B789 N26960) from LAX to MEL suggested as arriving at 1003 hours, 38 minutes late.

The next day, Tuesday 5 March 2019, sees UA839 from LAX to SYD (B789 N26952) arriving at gate at an estimated 0949 hours, 59 minutes behind the timetable. The 1120 hours SYD - LAX UA842 should still be able to push back on time if all goes well.

The LAX - MEL UA98 (N24973) is worse, with arrival forecast for 1059 hours, 94 minutes late.

UA99 from MEL to LAX, the 1125 hours has been cancelled.

In these circumstances would UA try to find seats for its passengers on competitors, or do they face an at least 24 hour wait for the next or subsequent flights?

Media is reporting that the Monday 25 March 2019 UA99 (B789 N15969, the scheduled 1025 hours MEL - LAX that was airborne at 1253 (about two hours late) has diverted to NOU. According to one traveller, there was the smell of 'smoke' in the cabin, although a later report claims it emanated from the coughpit.

Apparently the flight landed in NOU at 1622 AEDT (which is also 1622 in Noumea).

The LAX - MEL UA98 is again delayed with its Friday 5 April 2019 arrival likely at 0908, 38 minutes down. Aircraft is N15969, the usual B789.

Today's flight was cancelled...anyone know why? Just curious.

Nessa1977, it's helpful to state the flight number as while UA is only a small operator into and out of Oz, it has flights to two airports in SYD and MEL, and flies from SYD to IAH, LAX and SFO (not all daily) and MEL to LAX as well.

You seem to be referring to UA99, the 0930 hours MEL to LAX that has indeed on Thursday 2 May 2019 been given the boot.

Aircraft B789 N36962 was on UA98, the 2235 hours Tuesday night 30 April LAX - MEL that took off at 2304, but diverted to SYD. Because of this, that flight crew would have been unable to take the aircraft further - i.e. SYD to MEL - even if it was only a medical diversion or a minor problem such as requiring more fuel or something that could quickly be fixed, as presumably they'd be out of hours - beyond the maximum number of permissible duty hours.

This would be 18 hours but a former QF aviator said this can be extended to 21 hours by agreement, at least on his airline. Not sure if that applies to UA.

So pardon my long winded explanation but unfortunately the plane cannot quickly proceed from Sydney down to Melbourne, even though there'd be United flight and cabin crew in the southern city available to take it back to Los Angeles.
