"Unaccompanied" under 21 not allowed in USA QP anymore

Seems a change has occurred in the Lounge Eligibility and Access rules.

Eligibility and Access to The Qantas Club Lounges | Qantas

Seems that if you are under 21 and not with someone over 21, you won't be able to access the Qantas operated lounges in the USA anymore.

(Me suspects someone didn't really think about the new statement when they wrote it).

Perhaps they did think about it when writing this statement, for all we know they received a memo from various liquor licensing boards about people under 21 in the lounges.

"Customers under the legal drinking age must be accompanied by an adult in any Qantas operated lounge. Legal drinking age may vary in different jurisdictions and countries".

Not sure what the problem would be here. Have I missed something?

This is a common issue. One of the stars of Game of Thrones was denied access to BA's clubs in New York because they are under age.

Just the way it works in the States.

The difference being that in the USA there are adults under the legal drinking age, so the wording is weird. It should say accompanied by an adult over the legal drinking age.

Seems to be fairly generic wording. This is from Delta's website (access to Skyclubs). Note however it distinguished those clubs with a self-service bar:

  • Individuals must be at least 18 years of age for Club membership or access without a responsible, supervising adult.
  • Must be 21 years of age to access Clubs with a self-service bar, unless accompanied by a responsible, supervising adult who is also a Club member. Local age restrictions apply in non-US locations.

Just text my sister and her partner to ask if they were asked to see passports last week in the Qantas lounge at LA. They have only just turned 21 this year and look young.

We all flew Business so they had the lounge passes from CX. They both say at the bar and were drinking jacks/coughtails so be interesting to hear what they said.

We came in around 30 mins later so they didn't come in with us and our kids.

Miss FM had no trouble in 2012 - she was 3 months short of her 21st birthday, but no-one questioned her and she was able to enter the Flagship lounge in T4 at Lax and the F lounge in TBIT without any issues. I don't believe she had anything alcoholic to drink while in them as she knew she was "underage".

Well I was bloody annoyed that my 13 Year old was denied access at Melbourne when she was flying J over to Perth. I went out for my ciggie after flying in from Launceston and told her to meet me in the J lounge. Bloody shocked that QF club door bit*$ wanted her to leave immediately and hang around the terminal until I came back. Being in a pretty bad mood at the time I told the Lounge angel that her fare was more than her weekly wage and that I would take it further, I never did though.

That was June this year....

The question is was alcohol self service in those lounges in 2012? I've never used TBIT but last time I used the T4 lounge it wasn't self serve, in fact non Qantas pax had to pay, Qantas pax got vouchers.

TBIT had been fully self service until the new *O lounge opened.

Since 2011 (IIRC) A/C bars have had a selection of complimentary basic (or "well" ) alcoholic drinks (Beer, wine, spirits).

Cash or vouchers are required for drinks outside that selection.

She went into the Flagship in T4- from memory (could be wrong) you got vouchers in admirals club but it is self serve in Flagships? She was just let in in both lounges, no question as to age.

If an underage platinum flyer was denied entry are they entitled to a compo as they cannot access some plat benefits?

I highly doubt it since lounge access does not actually form part of the FF terms and conditions (which does surprise me a little), and clause 10.10 of QP says "Children under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult when visiting any lounge." Would cover them for lounge access.

Besides they are not preventing an underage statused member from entering the lounge, they are simply ensuring the entry does not contravene local liquor laws.

When QF started flying back into OOL and the QP hadn't opened yet, they were providing Platinum members with vouchers that could be used at stores within the terminal. It'd be nice if they did something like that (and this example demonstrates the principle/precedent in this situation).

lounge access (subject to the restrictions stated) does actually form part of your contract with Qantas.
