Well I was bloody annoyed that my 13 Year old was denied access at Melbourne when she was flying J over to Perth. I went out for my ciggie after flying in from Launceston and told her to meet me in the J lounge. Bloody shocked that QF club door bit*$ wanted her to leave immediately and hang around the terminal until I came back. Being in a pretty bad mood at the time I told the Lounge angel that her fare was more than her weekly wage and that I would take it further, I never did though.

That was June this year....

Sorry but I feel sorry for the Lounge angel here. Copped a gobful for doing her job...

Don't you know who I am?! Seriously, that's despicable behaviour and I'm surprised you would admit to it on a public forum.

Apart from the fact that you, not the QF employee, were in the wrong, attempting to make a point to someone by belittling them personally with reference to what they might earn is just a terrible way to conduct oneself.

Back on topic - lounges are licensed venues. I'm surprised that anyone is surprised that unaccompanied minors (whatever age that may be) aren't permitted.

lounge access (subject to the restrictions stated) does actually form part of your contract with Qantas.

There are a couple of clauses which basically state there may be additional benefits as published on qantas.com, however the only clause which actually states anything about lounge access is

20.1.7 Complimentary The Qantas Club membership for the period a Member maintains Gold, Platinum and Platinum One status level is provided subject to the Qantas Club terms and conditions.

and that is then trumped by The Qantas Club's T&C's which have in it

10.10 Children under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult when visiting any lounge.

10.11 Customers under the legal drinking age must be accompanied by an adult in any Qantas operated lounge. Legal drinking age may vary in different jurisdictions and countries.

So I suspect they would be in the clear re:Lounge access for underage status members.

I agree totally, Like I said I was in a terrible mood and felt ashamed afterward. Although i think she should of been told to wait in the foyer and not be told to go wandering around Tullamarine to find me.

EDIT. Even though its a public forum its not like my real name is out there. (or is that why I cant get my points upgrade ?)

Bad mood is no excuse for unacceptable behaviour.

I agree, it would have been better for them to ask her to wait at the entrance for you. I think your reaction was a bit OTT though. But good to know you felt ashamed afterwards....perhaps take a deep breath next time something upsets you

I admit that taking it out on the lady behind the desk wasn't the best approach. In hindsight what should of happened in my opinion is. "wait just there Laura, while we put out a call for your Dad, If he doesn't show in a timely manner we will have to call the Federal police. "
I'm sure there are plenty of people not aware of their licensing conditions. Its called "duty of care".. When a 16 or 17 year old apprentice turns up at a mine site (where he/she cant work) they are not escorted back to the highway 1000 Km from home and left to fend for themselves they are accommodated and their employer informed of the rules.
End Rant.

Umm actually in WA underage apprentices can work on mine sites, the legislation specifically allows it. However most FIFO sites choose to keep underage personnel out of the camp and thus offsite, so as they are not supplied alcohol either directly from the wetmess or by their colleagues.

You left your daughter unattended. Did she have a phone? Did she wait for you in the close vicinity of the lounge where you had agreed to meet? Even if that was by the entrance in the event she wasn't allowed in?

The lounge attendant owes neither you nor your daughter a duty of care in respect of providing somewhere for her to sit and wait for you. An airport terminal is not generally considered a 'dangerous place' for someone to be in. She was not the responsibility of the airline by a pre-agreed relationship, either because she was an unaccompanied minor, or because the had other special needs.

Sorry I still don't agree. They do not have a duty of care to your daughter. And they did not escort your daughter back to the road. Instead you have a duty of care to your daughter. You cannot assign that DOC to a third person without their agreement. I agree with you that you were unaware of the TC of lounges as am I ( see my query re similar in VA frequent flyer program recently). However that does not put your argument in a higher position.

Now if a kid turns up to the lounge distressed and say they can't find their parent, then a reasonable person will act to protect that child and obtain assistance. Your daughter probably said : "mum/dad is coming, s/he is just having a smoke outside". So it's patently clear your child does not need assistance and was not allowed in.

Live and learn. I have had to painfully on many occasions - welcome to the "tail between the legs" club
