Only a couple of months now until June 23rd, where eligible voters can vote on whether the UK should stay in or leave the EU.

There are a decent number of AFFers who will be eligible to vote, and for those with EU passports, the vote will affect your employment rights and various other travel/ living rights.

The UK's EU referendum: All you need to know - BBC News is a decent primer on what is involved.

I'm curious what your thoughts are. I'm still deciding what to vote, but seriously leaning towards an out vote (this matches my demographic, and is the result of being a Commonwealth citizen in an overly red tape tied EU country.)

So, in or out?

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Nothing parochial here: In.

Purely selfish reasons - BA would be having xx_x dreams about no longer having to deal with EU261/2004 should the uk exit.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Out is the only rational choice.

The EU is a cesspit of debt, illegal immigration, bonkers bureaucracy, and cultural timidity. The U.K. would be infinitely stronger if it was free to engage with the world independently. It would also result in a better deal for Australians - which is why I found it bizarre that Julie Bishop was running around saying Australia supported Britain staying inthe EU - she must have reverted to smitten schoolgirl mode with Cameron.

Sorry Isochronous, the empire's gone, and it's not coming back.

Do you think Switzerland has the best of both worlds? Out but with a 'special relationship'?

This is how I assume the UK will end up. Or several other European examples.

As the uk Is a net importer from the eu, I doubt any parting agreements will disadvantage the uk too much.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

It was obvious when the UK kept the pound that they were never fully-in. And from my various family members over there it seems that now the Brit public have had a good long look at EU bureaucracy and protection of inefficient practices in farming etc in continental countries, that they are quite likely to vote for out. It would then be up to the EU to decide if they wanted to establish a "special relationship".

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Out out out out out out out out out!
Being part of the EU has brought nothing good to the UK, and instead brought so many issues, I hope the referendum vote is for out.

Not being a member of the EU, but relying heavily on it for trade, means the Swiss have to comply with many EU decisions and yet have no say in their making. Like the UK there is some disquiet at the level of immigration from EU countries and this has led to a right wing shift in politics.

Very political thread but it cannot be helped. I am for what UK wants and it does look like leaving the EU!!( at this stage)

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Hopefully sanity prevails and Great Britain remains in the EU.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Boris Johnson talks a load of cr*p and is only interested in becoming prime minister. If you believe his confabulated examples of "EU bureaucracy" were written with anything other than this in mind then I've got a bridge you might be interested in buying.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Boris may be partly motivated by self-interest, but what is more bizarre is Cameron's disinterest in being PM of a sovereign independent country. The man is the ultimate empty suit.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

This notion that the UK is somehow not a sovereign country because it's in the EU is just childish rubbish. Where does it come from? (other than possibly racist paranoia?)

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

I'd personally vote to stay in the EU. I am a British citizen aged 55 or over and would be eligible to vote if I put my mind to it. I'll also be in Europe on 23 June.

The poll seems to be finely balanced at the moment, with the majority of over 55's wanting to leave. I guess they're looking backwards rather than forwards. Quite sad really...

Australians resident in the UK can vote too.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

I didn't go to all the hassle of getting UK Citizenship and a passport just to be relegated back to the "non-eu passport" line in Europe :(
:)

Yes it's the last suggestion and quite apt comment, IMHO.

FWIW: My vote would be to stay in, although we are probably set to make a nice profit on sterling vs A$ if they leave. But the rest would chaos, not the least the problem for interchange of staff, researchers and academics, teachers etc with European mainland countries.

hmm. Might be in south of England for a wedding in June. Maybe I'll see if I can vote. Bit of a hoot?:) We were surprised when in '78 we got to vote in the election that brought in Margaret Thatcher's lot. Actually you could see our votes in the resuits from Hove.:)
