Hi all

I just tried to book a flight (CBR - JFK rtn) and Qantas won't let me book a sale fare one way and a saver fare the other, saying: 'this fare is available with a different outbound fare type. Re-select your flight out'

What the hell? I always do this so I can upgrade one way. Have you seen anything about this??

edit: It greys out a lot of options depending on which fare type you choose. This seems new to me.

Thanks in advance!
Maddy

We did a booking BNE/xSYD/HNL on a Saver fare (in order to do an upgrade request) then returned on a sale fare HNL/xSYD/BNE as it's a day flight so didn't worry about trying to do an upgrade. To avoid the AUD30.00 cc fee pp we purchased a QF voucher (AUD50.00 pp I think) then did the booking from the link that said "redeem your voucher" or something like that and the availability display was different (better) than the regular availability search you do from the QF homepage in that it showed more fare options eg 'Business Sale' outbound for about AUD1800.00 and 'Sale' fare on the return for AUD479.00.

Often when browsing the QF website you'll get a pop-up from QF asking if you need any help so you could take than opportunity to run things by them rather than waiting on the phone for ages. It's possible that they may waive the booking assistance fee if getting the fare combo you want cannot be done on the website.

What dates was this for? If you look SYD/JFK/SYD does that allow you to combine saver and sale fare combinations? It may just be a CBR thing.

Did you try booking this online or over the phone? I have been able to book mixed class bookings over the phone in the past.

This is not new. There may well be some restrictions on fare types on some routes.

Some more flex fares have restrictions on the combinations that are allowed and/or require same booking class on all sectors. This is not new.

I would also say that less restrictive fare rules have been tightened up.

If you only want to upgrade in one direction they'd rather you paid for the fare you can upgrade in both directions.
