Aah I mean if I open the app, I can still hit the 'refresh' circle and it appears to still work.

I emailed TripIt support and got a reply much along the lines of what Mal reported: if you're logged in on your app, you're logged in until you log out. My only hope is the scum thief who stole it wipes the thing.

Funny issue with Tripit today.

I had to change a flight
(from JQ35 to JQ503) -- missing out on Dreamliner to boot.

JQ website clearly shows JQ503 as an A320 departing from T2.
These details have been copied to Tripit (via email to plans@ -- I find the gmail autograb too slow)

However it displays QF409
and later says JQ503 operated by QF409.

While the planes do depart at the same time. they are definitely different flights.

trip it has a a nifty feature for gmail users. You can give it authorisation to scan your emails automatically for itineraries. Saves you from forwarding on emails.

I find the website interface clunky. Mobile apps are a bit better.

I'm thinking about getting this app.

Q, what information do you send or allow auto access? Emails from airlines (booking confirmation) have a direct link to the "manage my booking" page - it appears anyone can cancel, manipulate your booking without any password confirmation. Is providing this kind of access to a third party normal for apps?

The itineraries I get from my Travel Agent don't import well into TripIt (Pro), so I enter the info manually. Its not as bad as it sounds (ie doesn't take long) - and I sometimes see things in the itinerary that I have missed before! Plus manually entering departure and arrival times from hotels for instance makes me look at the logistics for the day.

I wouldn't allow 'auto-access' to anyone! No sharing, nothing; just me and my itinerary.

I always enter data via the web site and ten look it up on the IPhone. MyFlights is a great complimentary application - it can link to TripIt and then monitors changes in reservations.

I love tripit but I don't give them full access. For me it's as easy as just forwarding the emails you choose to [email protected]

If only myflights came into the real world ... sigh ...

Anyhoo, I bit the bullet before a 15 segment (7 separate bookings) new year journey I undertook and paid an annual subscription as a back up.

In reality I find I am still ahead of TRIPit as far as notifications go, so whether I'll continue to ante up the jury is still out.

I do find it's a useful mobile reference to my itinerary and it's an easy way to put these together.

But, no, I don't use ANY of the networking/sharing functions (Automatic or otherwise).

If you go with the pro version, I'm guessing you need to cough up name/PNR as a minimum. Regardless if you auto or manual - isn't this all one needs to create havoc?

Again, entering the data manually, it has your name because its 'your' account' but then you enter whatever details you like. You can get very detailed if you like (eg who booked it, phone no.; agent # etc etc) but I think that's mainly for (say) if a PA is also looking at it. I stick mainly with basic flight data so it can remind me of gate / flight time updates, which it sends via SMS and e-mail. For hotels, the name of the hotel and address (so it can construct a map of how to get to the hotel from the airport), confirmation #, loyalty/club info and room type and rate (for handy reference at check-in).

The PNR bit I think is a flaw in TripIt, - maybe someone can correct me. For an itinerary, it asks for the booking reference. If you have mixed airlines / PNRs on the same itinerary, you can put more than one in, but it doesn't for instance put the Qantas PNR against the QF flights and the TG PNR against the Thai flights - it just lists both.

As for the PNR, the one used should relate to the ticketing airline. While there may be more than one PNR for a booking, there should be only one 'ticket'. (e.g. With an AA booking including QF flights you'll have both the SABRE AA reference and the Amadeus Qantas reference - the sabre reference is the only one guaranteed to include all flight in the reservation.

Ok, so basically it's a safe site (as one can get) to provide critical information?

The PNR of the ticketing airline should be the one to follow.

I hear what you are saying serfty, but there are a number of times when I have an 'itinerary' which has 2 separate tickets/journeys. For instance, recently I did a Canada business trip for my client, but I tacked on a side trip for myself in the middle. Two ticketing airlines, 2 PNRs. I have another one coming up where the long haul to and from the Gulf is on AA miles using Etihad, but the final destination to Azerbaijan from and back to Abu Dhabi is a paid ticket, on Qatar, via DOH. Again, 2 tickets, 2 PNRs for different parts of the single itinerary.

I might use TripIt differently from most - I simply have it as a record of pertinent details of my trip so they are easily to hand (ie on my phone) if I need them - check-in can't find my reservation, I want to know the route to the hotel from an airport, I have the PNR etc if I need to check or change a reservation. Oh, that and to get the gate/departure updates.

Edit: The reason this is a problem is that you only get to enter PNR once for the itinerary. TripIt assumes that it applies for each flight on the entire itinerary, which is often not the case for me.

Tripit can easily handle multiple PNRs - use this all the time.

Send first flight and it creates the trip.
Then go into TripIt and alter date range and trip title.
Then send the rest of flights and accommodation.
All sorted.

(You can also use Merge Trips if necessary)

The only thing I don't like about it is the annoying habit of using default hotel times of (2-12) for example for check-in / checkout so things are out of order until you change the times, and the Directions to Hotel (which seems superfluous) and will appear at intermedie stops on multi-segment flights

Tripit Pro is in the Google store for $0.20 today for those who do no have or have the free with ad's version.

It is listed as TripIt No Ads, and in the app it still has an apply for TripIt Pro??

I've had some big issues with TripIt lately that culminated in one almighty ****-up last week.

First, on multiple occasions TripIt fails to import Hyatt booking rates out of the Hyatt confirmation emails. I reported this late last year and got an email back saying perhaps Hyatt had changed their format and TripIt would look into it. But it's happened multiple times since.

Second, I went through a stage for a few weeks where I received a whole heap of multiple entries for everything from hotel stays to directions.

Three, I've recently had all sorts of anomalies with layover information. Some connections showed no layover information when connecting to another flight while others displayed wrong information. I contacted TripIt's support and was told that the industry standard is layovers over four hour are treated as stops rather than connections. Yet I provided screenshots of multiple connections of less than four hours, on the same PNR, where no connection information was showing. Then I had this whopper, a layover of some 251 hours:

TripIt layover.jpg

Four, I tried to manually update flight information after a massive AA round of schedule changes. However, TripIt didn't have their flights or flight numbers updated. So, for example my new flight number might have been AA123 from DEN-ORD but TripIt had it as JFK-SEA. I again contacted support and was told that all I needed to do with revised schedule changes was forward the email to TripIt and it would automatically update, provided the PNR was the same. I tried that and duplicated every damn flight rather than updated them. I contacted support again and got the run around. But the biggest failure came when TripIt tried to rectify their mistake. Someone at their end deleted the duplicate but in doing so deleting my extremely extensive, call-by-call notes for the four flight reservation. Notes like "2 Feb, call to AA Australia, Regina, changed from ADL-xBNE-HKG to ADL-HKG, additional taxes AUD14, charged to MC". I am meticulous with my notes and now they're all gone. TripIt tells me they have no backup, nothing. Lost forever.

If I could find a suitable alternative, one that displays Amadeus and Sabre information and provides alerts (gate updates, connection information etc.) I would jump at it.
