ric: the points were purchased not earnt from purchases - similarly if USDM but in this case ALM.

pete: my old nab card was minimum $500 so hadnt given it much thought but i recently took advantage of the HSBC offering and only now have read about the 90% of flight etc.

think ill just bite the bullet and get separate coverage.

Activation an coverage varies quite markedly by the the actual CC Plat insurance, even if the underwriting insurance company is the same.

COVERAGE TIP:
Whatever activates the insurance - make sure you have a copy of the proof of this WITH you, as it will greatly simplify any claim process. I travel with a hardcopy, plus have scanned copy stored on a folder in my, and wife's, hotmail accounts (as one of us may be incapacitated, and so each needs access)

COVERAGE OF TRIPS FLIGHTS BY FF POINTS:
Again this varies markedly. Depending where you got the points from can affect coverage (ie Citibank 15K of the points need to have been moved to the airline within one month prior to redemption)

This is crucial to me as I redeem virtually all of my international flights on points. I also might mix and match different programs, and the points may come from a variety of sources.

I have decided to use my Westpac Black (Zurich) for my next trip as my flights to and from Europe are via Krisflyer (and mainly, but not only, Amex earn) but I also have flights within Europe ( Vienan, to Barcelona to London to Munich) which originally from BMI, but have been redeemed from British Airways.

With Westpac Black activation is by PRIOR to departure having met BOTH of :
* Spent $500 spend per person travelling on the Black Card
* Having a ticket to and back to Australia (can be by buying, or by Awards...and can be two separate tickets rather than a return with one airline. Purchase does not have to be on the card, and points do not have to have been via the Altitude program.

Further Tip:
A key benefit of any TI is cancellation insurance. So note that this coverage will not commence until you have "activated" the insurance. So in my case I need to have spent $500 per person now, plus booked mu Award flight, if I want to be covered now for cancellation.

Two years ago I claimed on a Europe trip that I had to cancel due to my wife having a major accident, which prevented her from flying for 6 months, via the Amex Platninum (Charge) card insurance. Activation of that was easy as one just had to have an active Amex Plat Card. So coverage was automatic, as long as you met its fine print (duration of travel and return ticket).

No problems with Citibank Signature Insurance. Had bought a one-way ONLY, via Citibank Price-match Guarantee (remember that old beauty!!) and lost my $500 sunnies.
10 pages of claims forms but they paid in full!
No complaints about this service.

Anyone know if any credit cards that cover for the excess on car hire (I mean rental car), in Aus? Thanks

I have the WQFEDR, AMEX and NAB at the moment.

Westpac Black, Platinum Plus & Kris Flyer Platinum Cards provide rental car excess cover of $5,500 with a $250 excess in Australia.

ANZ platinum cards cover $5,000. I assume their new Black cards do too.

Any other ANZ credit card can can have rental car excess cover of $2,400 with $350 excess added for $24 a year.

Amex Plat Charge Card provides LDW up to something like $50,000.

For further details, Refer to numerous other threads that discuss this.

EDIT: Westpac 55 day Platinum card also provides the same cover as the other Westpac cards noted above.

Thanks Admel, I had read quite a few of the more recent threads and I'll phone call Amex tomorrow to check. Most of the other cards mentioned mentioned in the threads, I don't have. My annual travel insurance seems to be for overseas only, that's clearly an oversight on my part.

Do your self a favor & check out ANZ platinum card.... & only $87.00,IMO the best insurance credit card.

Thanks I'll look into that, but do like some incentive on their part eg a sign on bonus. :D

If by sign on bonus you mean reward points, note that this card does not earn reward points.

If you mean a discounted interest rate and/or annual fee, they were doing that, but it may have finished.

Westpac have a similar card.

ANZ Platinum DOES have reward points, but just to their own Sphere programme. I think it might be possible to link it with Qantas FF, but am not sure.

A few months ago I cashed in a few years worth of points for $800 in Caltex vouchers, so it's not an insignificant programme!

As for international travel insurance, I am fairly sure that's what most cards offer. But ANZ adds on rental excess insurance in Oz, and they also recently (last year I think) added in even more domestic insurances. I agree with the other poster that it is well worth the annual fee.

No reward points with ANZ Platinum....just great insurance @ a low cost, there are reward points with ANZ Platinum F.F. card [with QANTAS]at higher annual cost.

Thanks I will look into the ANZ Plat. Do people rely on a cc for all their travel? I have never been comfortable doing that, but I respect the expert thoughts on here.

I dont know about EXPERT THOUGHTS.... but I always pay my $250.00 before we leave Australia..had a few claims with no problems...I have had this card for more than 30 years [it was GOLD then]..I also have Amex Plat charge & Amex plat C.C reserve
but since Amex changed there rules...still rely on ANZ Plat.

they mean the pay at least $250 of the travel with the card.

ANZ Platinum DOES have rewards points (they call it Sphere) just they cannot be linked to a Frequent Flyer programme.

In general terms the reward programs talked about on A.A.F. are for flights & hotels ... not so much for Steak knives & scotch etc..that is fly buys stuff, so Sphere is as you say is a rewards point program..but about as useless as cough on a Bull..if you are after
Flights etc.

Well, $800 in Caltex vouchers left me $800 of my cash to spend on steak knives, or flights!

Just to be clear, is it a $250 spend on travel specifically, or for anything at all?
