What is the best or available travel policy for my grandfather.
Traveling from Melbourne to TelAviv, has preexisting conditions.
Aiming for March next year.

I though it was probably impossible. it certainly was more than 17 years ago when some of my patients of that age bracket wanted to go OS. but a quick google of over 90s TI came up with this.

I would be reading the exclusions very carefully in case they sneak in any exclusions like excluding medical cover for falls (that are more common in older people).

Agree it is important to read the PDS. A quick check of it doesn’t seem to show up any particular exclusions such as a fall.

Love that the ‘baby boomer’ policy covers pregnancy!

I thought the PDS looked familiar and it is indeed the ‘standard’ Allianz policy under a different colour scheme and branding. There is an exclusion in this policy, which I guess is in their others, that they don’t cover medical if you have been treated under a reciprocal health agreement with the countries that participate in that scheme.

I wonder if they would try and channel you into one of those hospitals rather than a private one.

Looks like they're getting prepared for your future travel there @drron :)
I hope you and @mrs.dr.ron are both doing TRs for us in your 90s.

I'm 78 and have flown overseas a few times in the last 5-6 years. I looked at travel insurance quite carefully, but as I have pre-existing conditions that are hideously expensive to get cover for, I don't bother getting cover for that. I just get basic insurance to cover delays, lost luggage etc and cross my fingers! If I have a medical emergency, I'll just have to suck it up. A couple of times I've just relied on credit card travel insurance, and that worked when we had to cancel a trip to Europe because of my late wife's illness.

When visiting family in NYC I told them that if I have a fall and break a leg (or similar event), just get me a business class ticket and send me home.

When I got quite ill in Luang Prabang I was advised to get myself to Bangkok and go to a hospital there. (I got better enough to not need that)

Maybe I've been lucky ...

I recall I saw one mainstream policy which covered one up to age 103. I'd be delighted to get to that age and still have the desire and capacity to undertake overseas air travel!
Maybe they are not expecting many takers.

The devil is in the detail, & that is usually secreted away on page 92, as was Amex/Chubb clause that they only covered return flights ??
Interestingly, having just booked with QF, hopefully for the last time, they offer travel insurance but it is limited to the age of 69 !, counts me out.
Currently use NIB who I am already paying a motza for health insurance, it's a win win for them re medical cover built into the premium.
We really need a disrupter who offers tailor made policies, I do not need pregnancy cover nor golf clubs or loss of earnings etc etc
Will check out the boomers site .

allcleartravel.com.au has no age restrictions. They are the company of last resort. They are the only company in Australia who will insure my husband. I won’t bore you stiff with his full list of illnesses but the main ones are heart failure, stroke, type 1 diabetes etc. He is 74 and he considers himself very lucky to get to that age. For a 1 trip policy AllClear usually charges us around $3000 but for a yearly policy they charged about $3600, needless to say we always took the yearly policy. Those figures were pre covid, we have not travelled since. We would never travel without insurance. We mainly cruise with Silverseas, it was on one of their cruises my husband was ill, when we left Sydney he was so well. You never know what is around the corner. Whenever we fill out travel insurance pre existing condition forms we always show our GP who oks our answers and keeps a copy on her files, that way if an insurance company phones her she has the the answers which she has approved. Insurance companies have a hard job arguing the toss with that.Good luck finding insurance.

Thanks Dilligas, will check it out

Almost all policies require return flights/tickets to Australia, unless specifically buying a one way policy. Not exactly sure why… it might be to help offset the cost of return travel if you need to be repatriated.

Will take a look at this one. Thank you for the reply.

@infrequent_jim How did you find a travel insurance company that will offer just basic cover for delays, lost luggage etc ? I also used to use just platinum credit card cover, and have never made a claim in many years of travelling. But I'm now 82 and so over their 80 y.o. cut-off.

Now I'm planning a 3-4 week trip to the UK only (I am a British citizen and also have family there) but including a side-trip with a UK company that requires me to have insurance cover while with them.

When I enter my travel details with any of the companies mentioned above (aand others) I am offered only a "Gold" level policy covering many items I don't need, such a rental car excess waiver (I don't drive), domestic pet, travelling companion etc. I want just minimal basic cover.

Exactly cgichard, this is just all "premium padding" , where are the Budget Direct, Youi, AAMI etc, etc.
Well, nowhere it seems, as most are simply on-selling the likes of Allianz et al under a different banner.

Sorry but as we age we are basically just lucky to find any company that will insure us. That they include things we don’t necessarily need is unfortunate but a fact of life. Private health insurance is much the same. Even if there was a basic policy in the market age would exclude us.

I've done a lot of searching and eventually came across Easy Travel Insurance, which proved to be virtually identical to Cover-More, and underwritten by Zurich. All the contact & claim numbers seem to be those of Cover-More. By increasing the excess and excluding trip cancellation I actually arrived at a premium a little under $500, less than a third of what I was seeing with other companies.

However Cover-More have been getting shocking reviews recently on product review etc. Have AFF members had similarly bad experiences recently? I'm still within the "cooling-off" period, so could still cancel.

Agree, I came to CoverMore , Zurich as the underwriter is comme ci comme ca, but, I have also checked the reviews & have my doubts now.
I did use them early this year for travel to the UAE based upon a family recommendation, but did not have to make a claim so not much help I am afraid.

Still on topic? The post just a couple above yours is for a pax at 82, when most policies have an upper limit of 80.

I’d say this is more an issue for 80+ rather than ‘age 92’ specific!
