YesAre they called stanchions (with retractable belts)?
This is what I do every single time I have an international flight out of MEL.I look to book the domestic flight the day before using multi-city - keeping a connection time of 24 hours or less. That way it prices up the same way.
It does require an overnight hotel in / near MEL.

In future as mentioned you can use multi-city to get better and realistic connections but note if using a gift voucher book what's on offer and then before midnight call Qantas and ask to change flights. In your case ask for earlier SYD-MEL flight or even the night before.@Austman I was hoping no checked luggage would help.
I would prefer an earlier flight down to Melbourne but the choice wasn't given and I want all on one ticket in case of delays
