Transit in Melbourne

It was in this state for a brief period earlier in the year during the transition to the new arrangements; I encountered it once, but not since.

Aaah, yes that makes sense. It was a bit messy during the transition.

RE: the movement of the frosted glass door where the first security check by the sole guy/girl is done, thanks for the info.
I am going through in Dec this year, will have to get used to something new again.
SQ J MEL - WLG, so lets see what comes from this new odyssey.
Will be try the MEL SQ KF lounge, as well as the MEL NZ Koru (if I could), ...

What I mean by bunting, is that zic zac line of fabric, on the metal poles that leads you left and right, left and right, left and right to slow people down...
The one to the immi line has ABF printed on it, where as the security one is just plain blue.

Are they called stanchions (with retractable belts)?

I look to book the domestic flight the day before using multi-city - keeping a connection time of 24 hours or less. That way it prices up the same way.

It does require an overnight hotel in / near MEL.

... but then, the corn fritters are yours! (With F/L access.)
This is what I do every single time I have an international flight out of MEL.
Drive to SYD the day before and overnight at the Park Royal. Makes for a stress free start to the trip. Recently used my P1 discount to book SYD-MEL-LAX. Was unable to to a multi city on the website so I booked the same day connection and called up to use my same day free change.
Was an extra $4.14 per ticket.

@Austman I was hoping no checked luggage would help.
I would prefer an earlier flight down to Melbourne but the choice wasn't given and I want all on one ticket in case of delays
In future as mentioned you can use multi-city to get better and realistic connections but note if using a gift voucher book what's on offer and then before midnight call Qantas and ask to change flights. In your case ask for earlier SYD-MEL flight or even the night before.

I've done it many times extending connection in SYD so I can go home to collect/drop off luggage and golf clubs.

Just saw a Youtube video of the way that the MEL int departure zone is now, as mentioned above, no more frosted double glass doors, more now more so like a wide human mouth, guess its better like this, than the previous system.
Thanks to the member who mentioned it, otherwise I would not have known.
