I am arriving Jetstar with then 3 hours connection using Turkish to Istanbul. Seeing Jetstar are a one point airline, and seeing my Turkish booking is an online eticket. Do I have to exit immigration and check in with Turkish and then re-enter, thus having to pay departure tax and also painfully having to get my passport stamped etc?

If you have checked luggage, then the answer is YES.

If carry on only then it's a very simple transit at BKK.

If you purchased your ticket after around Feb this year, the THB500 should have been included as a +++ in the purchase price.

Yes departure tax has been included in the purchase price from Feb 2007 but also increased to 700THB at the same time.

Note I had a very weird experience when transferring to the 6am flight to HKT on BankgkokAir.

Arrived 10pm, crashed in the QC FL until the London flights left and it closed then wandered the airport, got a massage, and found a pub on the top floor that let me crash for a while.

Then showed up at the Domestic Transfers only to be told no I had to go through Customs and Immigration nad back through normal check-in so my bag could be scanned. Luckily no queues so I did it all in 20min.

(I actually assume this may be because the Transfer desk wan't setup at that hour to do the relevant immigration steps. I think going to another country you'd be ok if only carry-on)

I am told that Turkish do not have an agreement with Thailand to pay the tax with the ticket.

This is not a domestic transfer, its an international one, so I will have to collect my luggage, having more than carry on unfortunately. This is the point that I am thinking in that Jetstar do not forward lugagge. last year I had to connect with a Qantas flight from Singapore to Melbourne and used Jetstar to get from Bangkok to Singers.. Only 45 mins transit and I had to refuse to check in my carry on luggage in bangkok which was some 5 kgs overweight as they make you go through imigrataion in Singapore, collect the bags, then check back in and go through emigration. Just made it as it was. But Singapore seems better set up to deal with ticket collection and allocation in transit from what i can see anyway

If you are checking luggage you will definitely have to clear customs and immigration

Thanks for all that. I do not understand why luggage collection is after immigration in airports. Can anyone enlighten me as to the reasoning? It would seem logical that a persons belongings would be better accompanying them. I am amazed that lugage does not often seem to be stolen from carousels

Because internationally the carousels are still effectively airside.

Note that theft is not uncommon at domestic terminals.

Your information is probably more current than mine but as far I understand all airlines had to include the departure tax with the airfare from 1st February 2007. I would be very surprised if this was not the case with all airlines.

Queues at immigration are long and snakey enough as it is. Don't need trolleys and all that cluttering it up further. Also, the wait at immigration usually gives the baggage monkeys time to get luggage to the carousel. Otherwise you'd be waiting at the luggage carousel, then waiting at immigration and/or customs. Only the British would enjoy all that queueing. Also, I'm guessing that once you've passed through immigration you have officially entered the country for customs/declarations purposes.

In your case, you'll definitely have to go and fetch your bags and check them in again. Can you contact Turkish Airlines and ask them if the Thai dep tax is included in your ticket.

Actually travellers transiting through Bangkok may like to note that i bought a ticket to Shanghai via Bangkok from Melbourne with a day between connections a couple of months back .. I planned to go into Bangkok and stay o/n, relax, there before going to Shanghai .. it cost me the airport tax of 700Thbht ( not an enormous amount) but the hassle of now having to go to through an unknown proceedure to pay it was disconcerting ( plus having a Thbht cash) .. I was advised I should have stayed in the airport hotel inside the airport..but on the return leg with 2 days stay in Bangkok I had no exit tax!!. I think Thailand should consider giving free of airport tax, exit passes lasting at least 24 hrs.. The taxi fares and hotel charges etc in my opinion, would easily give them extra revenue to recover any loss in taxes.

I have asked Turkish in Sydney by email.. they did reply (thks Turkish as Malaysian never did last year when my phone was "lost" in the First Class coat cupboard btw Attk and KL ) but unfortunately I was not intelligent enough to understand them ...
