I plan to buy a camera lens before I travel overseas.

The lens will cost over the concession of $900.

If I claim the refund with the TRS but plan to bring it back to Aus with me(and not declare it), is it a silly move?

Will Customs check for that item in particular?

Are myself and my wife's concessions combined to total $1800 together?

Thanks.

You should not try to bring it back in undeclared, as they will have a record of it. You can combine concessions, and dont forget its value has decreased since its used, so take 25% off the cost which is how it will be assessed on return.

Thanks for your reply.

So if I take the honest approach and claim the TRS and not hide the fact that I will be bringing it back with me, but that it will be fine due to my Wife and I combining concessions, all should go smoothly?

I would expect so, they tend to be lenient to those doing the right thing.

If the lens is the only item you are bringing back duty free between the two of you and its value is $2400 or under, then you should be fine. ($2400 less 25% is the $1800 combined limit. )

Am I missing something here, or would the saving end up being just 2.75% of the purchase price, up to a maximum of $45? Is it worth the time and hassle?

EDIT: up to a max of $66 I think, but still that doesn't seem like a massive saving in the context of a purchase price of $2,400

EDIT again, now I get it, you'd save all of the GST due to the concession, ignore the above! Too early in the morning!

I've claimed the TRS on photography items valued at a bit over $2,000 on several occasions in the past 2 years. Travelling alone, so with a customs limit of $900, I've declared the item on my return, and simply been thanked for being honest and told to keep moving.

That's cool Phily. The lens is around $1250, but we will also bring back some other things from shopping, but combined it will be well under, and am I correct in assuming my 1 year old daughter qualifies for a $450 concession? If so all together we will be more than fine.

Thanks for the replies.

Its a no brainer but some think kids get a booze allocation as well that can be pooled, they don't.
