Total Solar Eclipse Australia 22 July 2028

Kimberleys 1100 local time
Sydney 1400hrs local time - all other capital cities will only get a partial eclipse. The % of eclipse obscuration is found on the obscuration lines (indicating % obscuration)
If you are off the Kimberley coast on that day, you may get 5 minutes of total eclipse.
PeaK dry season as well.

Interactive map to get the TSE time for the eclipse path

Path of TSE
The closer your location is to the centre of the path, the greater the eclipse obscuration and the longer the duration.

😂

Belts and braces, I’ve just blocked out all of July 2028 in my diary!

I've started planning and wondering the best way to see it presumably from WA - hope I don't have to hire a caravan at great expense and drive it through woop woop

There is a suspicious gap in Ponant's Kimberly scheduled cruises from 16-26 July that year. I suspect they'll have a 'special' advertised soon.

Unless you want to camp at Mitchell Falls or Devils Marbles, the hint " off the Kimberley coast " is significant😉
It’s supposed to be close to 4 mins totality over Sydney (first total eclipse since 1857). So a zero $ uplift works for me. Just pray it doesn’t rain!

Would the probability of that be higher than the dry season in the NT?

But yes, great for SYD based people, but I suspect AFF are always looking for a reason to travel

What about Dubbo?

July up there virtually no chance of rain. And, going back to the cruise, they could manoeuvre to try to get clear skies. I've done that Kimberly cruise otherwise I'd look closely at it (assuming I'm correct - but what else is the vessel going to do between other Kimberly cruises)?

You’d expect clear skies off the Kimberly and definitely top dollar.

SYD Lounge crawl 23 Jul?

Actually, the T1 QF lounges could be prime viewing locations on the 22nd! Hmm? 🤔
What about Dubbo?
Coin toss if it could be cloudy, rainy, snowy(!) in Dubbo v SYD!

Probably not as the FLounge faces slightly NE.
The dead centre of the lounge faces NE. Far right almost E and far left almost N. BUT, one can turn their head and face NW.

2 pm July would be far to the NW
Probably decent viewing similar to watching planes on approach/landing on 16R.

This photo was coincidently taken around midday on 23 July 2024(!) facing NNE (CBD in the background). But it was easy to see more towards the west. When happily enjoying a meal.

But I won’t be there (unless some amazing airfare pops up), but it could be a hoot for those who happen to have a ring side seat.

Who knows what happens to aircraft ops during a total eclipse?

Anyway, we’ll probably wonder down to Centennial Park to observe the surreal behaviour of the birds and humans.

The 22 July 2028 total solar eclipse is the first total solar eclipse in Sydney since 26 March 1857 and will be the last total solar eclipse until 3 June 2858. If you want to catch a total solar eclipse in Sydney, I suggest catching the 2028 one, rather than missing it and having to wait another 830 years.

I'll be catching the 12 August 2026 total solar eclipse (which will be visible in a corridor from Greenland and Iceland across to the north west of Spain and parts of Portugal) from Ferrol, on a cruise timed to coincide with the eclipse.

There are a couple of cruises there timed for that. One will sans Bonnie Tyler…😔.

QUOTE]
but there is another Ponant vessel going to be in the area - a Smithsonian charter.
It appears to be on a waitlist for the public at least. And you would / may not like this one (apart from the fact you done Ponant kimberley) as the No single supplement does not exist - pay double.

Re the "gap"...

LeS ' schedule suggests a back to back Darwin >> Broome
As it is not possible to ferry Broome to Darwin, potentially some of the schedule is actually a Broome >>Darwin rather than the published Darwin >> Broome, and the "gap" might be one of those.??

So potentially 2 Ponants LeS and LJC on the "Eclipse" Kimberley - one in each direction and one of them chartered?

LeS current Darwin >> Broome schedule:

LeS current Darwin >> Broome schedule:

If you look at the full 4 cruises listed, those cruises alternate Darwin <-> Broome, as you'd expect. The ones either side of the 'gap' are, as you observe, Darwin -> Broome. So the missing cruise will be Broome-> Darwin, as you say.

I wonder if they are trying to flog the cruise to another charter group?

Ah yes - visible when click "discover" for the dates.

The missing gap would be a Broome>> Darwin and perhaps as you say waiting for another charter, or maybe holding back to see what the public interest is for LJC with prices to match...

Coral Expeditions is another line (Australian) that does the Kimberly - in smaller vessels than Ponant! But their schedule only to 2027 ATM.

Sure to be there and sure to be very expensive!
