One for @RooFlyer

Noice! Did you go to the wine bar? I took a small AFF group there once, and I think most were a bit under-whelmed.

So, 3 pics per trip? Here's mine for my trip to the 5 Stans last year. Best trip, ever ...

Darvaza Crater, the 'Door to hell', Central Turkmenistan. For scale, you can just make out the glow of a person to the right of the 2 dots of light on the rim to the left. It was a natural gas deposit, drilled and then set alight by Russians about 45 years ago, when the well started crumbling to 'burn the gas off'. The crater has been getting bigger and on fire ever since! My #1 sight I've seen in the world (if for no other reason that its so bloody hard to get there!)

The Registan, Samarkand, Uzbekisan, three madrassas dating from the 15th century. It was specially lit up for a show for the president the next day. Again, for scale, look at the boundary between the dark and light to the left of the central darker box in the foreground. The little ants are people. this place is freak'n enormous!

Termez, Uzbekistan; view across the Oxus River to Afghanistan. Again, an amazing sight considering where you are!

Lake Baikal, Russia, the largest fresh water lake in the world, and deepest. If you took the mud out of the bottom, you could submerge Mt Everest in it.

JohnM's recent TR's on Lake Ballard and Sandalwood harvesting out in that remote area induced me to hunt up some photos from long ago. Some of these were taken when I took my father to revisit the Goldfields of W.A. in 1992 when he was 88 years old. A couple were from my brother took him out camping in the same area in 1988. They were mostly taken at the site of what used to be the town of Davyhurst about 120 km northwest of Kalgoorlie, 66 km south west of Menzies and about 90 km south of Lake Ballard.

These photos are in an old photo album and have become stuck to the pages so I have had to take photos of photos. Please excuse the quality.

My father and the '5 head battery' he had helped build around 1925 - 1935. Taken in 1988

By 1992 - the scavengers had been in and this was all that remained. He was a bit upset at the destruction

This looks like just a pile of random ashes but it was actually the remains of a water condenser plant that used to supply fresh water for all the surrounding areas. You can see by the vegetation that there is salty water close to the surface. My father used to be employed to chip scale and rust out of the boiler tubes when he was a young boy around the time of WW1. We would never have recognised what this area was without having him with us.

Here is some information on them plus a photo of a small plant.

The main street of Davyhurst in 1992. There had been a lot of recent rain.

Davyhurst in its glory days - probably a few years after my father was born there in 1904.
