*Apologies, I didn't realize I couldn't post links yet. My website is cyclingiq.com, the article 'Frequent flyer | Art of the travelling cyclist' can be found on the home page*

Hi all,

I'm a long-time road cyclist and frequent flyer of several years.

Recently, I started a small hobby website focused on cycling; I'd like to share some tips with AFF members that are also keen road cyclists.

Perhaps someone else on this forum may be struggling with the same dilemma I faced - how to keep up my cycling with a high travel load - and may find these tips useful.

P.S. before posting this, I searched for an appropriate sub-category under "Travel Insider Tips" but couldn't find one. Hope it's okay to post here.

Cheers,
Cam

Welcome to AFF, Cam.

Like the tips in there - curious about the bag; did you buy in Japan?

Also, note no groups in HK, but surely there's more scope for cycling there than in SIN?

Cheers

Thanks Tooner,

Yes, I purchased the bag whilst in Tokyo. I'm pretty sure Ostrich has been looking for an Australian distributor for their products but, until then, I'm sure they would find a means to supply Australian customers. I'd be very happy to provide (English-speaking) contact details for anyone who is interested.

Good observation on the omission of HKG from my list. The fact is, almost every time I visited HKG, I always stayed at the Novotel Citygate on Lantau Island. I think some of the quietest and best training roads are on this patch of land. It's possible to do a punishing 2hr ride (or more with repeats) which includes a good climb and descent into Mui Wo, then along South Lantau road and doubling back over Tung Chung road to the hotel. Plus, there's several shuttle services into the city and you're always close to the airport.

Appreciate you taking the time to read the article. Do you travel with your bike currently?

No problem - always interested. I haven't taken a bike with me yet, though looking to ride some early stages at the TdF and wondering about taking a bike along. Otherwise I'd have to hire one. I did read somewhere else that a soft bag is often best as long as everything is carefully packed.

On HK I've done some walking on Lantau from near the Big Buddah to Chek-O I think. Amazing place!

Great article and website CiQ. I'm a mountain biker myself (wrote an article on travelling with mtbs in Mountain Biking Australia about 2 years back) but need to do road miles for fitness and every year do a foreign cycle tour. I admire the dedication of taking your own wind trainer with you. A friend of mine who works for Boeing has a fantastic Ritchie break-away frame that comes with its own travel case that looks just like a suitcase, very lightweight and strong - would be my first choice of travel bike. You work for BMC? - ever meet Cadel?
cheers

Thanks CrazyDave98, I agree the Ritchey is a great solution for a frequent-flying cyclist. I had something similar but, for the reasons stated in the article, changed to a standard road bike.

I worked for BMC until late last year, before deciding to embark on my solo projects. I first met Cadel when he started riding for BMC and was lucky to be involved in some pretty cool projects that were built around him.

Is there a link to your article in MBA anywhere? I'd like to read it.
