Tight transit in KL

Hi All. Hoping to get some help on an upcoming J Class QFF points flight booked from DOH to SYD via KL on Qatar and Malaysia.

Qatar have just advised that the DOH-KL flight will be pushed back such that we now have only 25 mins to make the transit at KLIA. The flights are on one booking, so we should have boarding passes for both flights.

2 Qs:

1. If flight from DOH lands on time (8.45am on a Wed), is this at all realistic given it appears landing and take off will be in the C-gates area? I'm guessing it must be possible or presumably Qantas/Qatar wouldn't ticket it

2. If we miss the ticketed KL-SYD flight, are we likely to be allocated J Class on next available flight or is that dependent on there still being points seats available on that flight? We only Silver with QFF

In an ideal world we would re-book one or more of the flights, but looks like no real chance of securing a new J class booking at this stage.

Any views much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to AFF!

I suspect your bookings will be cancelled at some stage… if you no longer meet minimum connecting time the ticket will fail, and qantas or qatar will no longer honour the current connections.

I suggest you contact qantas as soon as possible to ask about alternative flights… doing it as early as possible means you will have better options. The longer you leave it anyone else travelling will snap up the seats.

If that 25 minutes is between your arrival time and the onward departure time (not boarding) then absolutely no chance. KLIA satellite concourse isn't THAT big, but it's not small enough.
As the member above posted, likely the itinerary will be reworked, or you may need to trigger that

is this at all realistic

No because in KLIA, your carryons are security scanned at the gate which adds to the time.

are we likely to be allocated J Class on next available flight
If both sectors are on the same ticket then they should rebook you, but this is uncertain. Need to ring QF.

You're not making these flights unless it's the same plane making a stopover.

Identify other flights that might be suitable and ring QF. Now.

Oh, and welcome to AFF.

Welcome to AFF, the connection is near on impossible as others have suggested contact QF. IME QR and MH are some of the more difficult OW airlines and as your booking has been made through QF they just may try wash their hands of it, say there is nothing they can do and refund your points and taxes leaving you to deal with the problem.

What was the original connection time?

I've had scheduled flights moved to different concourse in KUL airport in the past.

Gates can also close early there too.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have managed to change the flight to the one leaving 11.55pm.
Was useful to know about the in terminal security screening before boarding. Qantas, who were ultimately very helpful, were initially of the view that 25 mins was fine given we are flying in/out of same terminal. When I asked if that took into account the potential delay for security, the rep went away and consulted before coming back and saying we needed to change.

There was a mooted additional cost for making the change, but she also agreed that really should borne by the airlines given I was only seeking to make the itinerary viable and now had a 15 hour layover in doing so.

Good thing you mentioned the security issue. While I don’t believe that was the valid reason for changing your flights, at least the agent went away and discovered ‘minimum connecting time’. :)

Just to be sure…
Has your new itinerary been ticketed?
Do you have new ticket numbers starting 081- ?

MCT appears to be 60 minutes, so no way it would be allowed.

Exactly. I still can’t fathom how in this day and age of technology this isn’t identified immediately and rectified. If the OP hadn’t have been guided by the kind folks on here and proactively contacted QF I’m willing to bet that the outcome wouldn’t be anywhere near as positive.

Agree. I’m not sure if Qatar would automatically protect if the inbound flight didn’t meet MCT. And Qantas would say something like ‘we tried to contact you but were unable’ :(

Good outcome, just make sure it re-tickets properly!

Just one other comment - not that it makes any difference in this instance or any any scheduled connection as they all need to meet the MCT - but if an inbound flight is running late and making things tight - security at the gate actually makes it easier to make a tight connection, compared to common security in (most) international airports where arrivals and departures are separated and you often have to backtrack to a central security point and be stuck in a queue with everyone - not just those on your specific flight.

Thanks dajop. I don't have the e-tix yet but the revised itinerary shows in all the airlines' apps. Any tips on how long I should wait for the e-tix before going back to Qantas?

With Qatar airways in the ticket, no later than 20 or so hours. Ideally should be ticketed by 24 hours.

Thanks jase. I was somewhat astounded that this change was able to be included in a revised itinerary and that Qantas initially thought 25 mins for the transit was fine. And yes, thanks again for all the good folks providing the helpful advice. Much better a 15 hour layover, than stranded in KLIA begging for the next available flight out, which almost certainly would not have been on J class.
