Hmmm okay then! Judges must be on something pretty potent for them to make this decision.

Tiger Airways has made 2010 truly the “Year of the Tiger” by winning the coveted Low Cost Airline of the Year award from the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA). In the CAPA Aviation Awards for Excellence 2010, Tiger Airways again beat the field repeating the feat it first achieved in 2006

Tiger beat Jetstar and Virgin Blue for LCC?!? Mmmm not buying that.

Given it's Asia, dont forget Tiger's presence in SE Asia (not just Aus) where their "practices" are more accepted and may have had more influence on the outcome.

The process sounds very grey:

In the judging process, Asia Pacific airports, airlines and the industry are reviewed constantly through the year via CAPA’s extensive data and information services gathering and reporting. This daily performance analysis, along with feedback from CAPA Members, is accumulated into a series of recommendations. A highly experienced aviation advisory panel – including industry CEOs – reviews and decides on the recommendations.

Surprised Air Asia didnt win though....

1. We're not an LCC and JB would be very displeased to win an award by that name
2. Very limited pool of LCCs within Asia-Pacific to choose from (let's see there's Tiger, Air Asia, Jetstar then daylight - so it was just Tiger's turn again)
3. These sort of awards are treated as a joke within the industry - it's just an excuse for the promoter to publicise themselves so that the press go and ask them for sound bites next time they need "expert" comment

Umm
1. it was before JB
2. we didn't promote the fact that we won it
3. I could be wrong on this one but at least IIRC Skytrax is determined by a large public vote and not a nameless "highly experienced aviation advisory panel – including industry CEOs"

No need to get upset about it crazydave!

Do remember JB hasn't actually done anything significant yet that would make people re-evaluate DJ as not being a LCC. Am a regular flyer myself and its still feels like one on the main part to be honest.

I'm looking forward very much to seeing his plans, details & timelines of the relaunched DJ :D

What determines a LCC vs normal? I tend to think if you have an a la carte arrangement (no free food, drinks, baggage), you're a LCC. But I'm just one member of a very large flying population.

I don't really know, DJ would probably say 'but we also provide connecting flights, a FF program and lounges'...

I think the point being most people still think DJ are a LCC because they still act like one.

I think DJ think they are bit more than a LCC which is fair, and they are going to try and take on QF soon which implies more visible changes to shake the LCC image.

The only way for DJ to get rid of their LCC image is to complete rebrand themselves as well as massive advertising campaign. Most people still think DJ as LCC. That's how they started anyway.

Actually, Virgin did promote it

Virgin Blue > News and Press Releases

After my DJ flight from MEL-PER last Sunday, JB has a lot to do to move DJ from being a Low Cost Carrier;

1. Online Check-in wasn't working - everyone at the gate had shopping dockets
2. Selling Live to Air - which didn't work anyway - and the crew had to come around with refunds. Why they took cash payments in the first place (when it was apparent the system wasn't working is another question)...
3. Selling food - Sandwiches were past use by date and muffins were so stale they were as hard as a rock.

Here's hoping they get rid of the leather seats. I know some people are fans, but I find them uncomfortable on the longer trips.

Judging by the feedback here, it does seem that JB has his work cut out for him in trying to shake off the LCC perception out in the marketplace.

How would the Air NZ Trans Tasman offering fit then?

There are a number of characteristics that could be used to define an LCC. Some of their characteristics are

  • Single aircraft type
  • Single class
  • Minimum on board options (no IFE etc)
  • Simple fare scheme
  • Use of secondary aiprorts
  • Simple route structure, preferring Point to point flights
  • Use of direct sales channels
  • Avoid use of aerobridges where they can
  • Paying for extras
  • Pay for snacks, rather than meals
Virgin Blue has moved away from being a true LCC, than the others have,

Still I am surpirsed Tiger won it over Jetstar or Air Asia. Maybe it really is just sharing the prize around.

Mmmmm, somedays it feels NZ are moving very down market, somedays up market.

I think their strategy is to go premium on long haul and LCC with some frills on short haul.

They tried doing the QF/JQ thing with Freedom and it was a complete failure... In fact I think some Freedom A320's are still flying around just repainted as NZ.... So I guess they are just mixing up the NZ brand to flex according to what the route demands.....

Will see how it goes!
