I was once booked on JQ OOL-MEL and the flight was cancelled. I was livid because I could just have stayed with my Mum and had already returned the hire car before I found this out (they claimed to have texted me, but I didn't get it). I said I was not bussing to BNE, they can stuff that, and they told me I had been booked on a VA flight 5 hours hence! Yes, they flew me home on VA, who actually were really lovely to me, because I was so upset. The plane was not very full and I had a whole row to myself (though surely that was chance). Meanwhile JQ gave me a $10 voucher to use in the airport during my 5 hour wait. Pretty sure that was the last time I flew them.

I’ll never quite understand it. I’ve had a HNL-SYD JQ cancellation (QF Award) and they switched me to the QF flight. There was only 100 of us on the A330 so a few hundred spare seats. The JQ flight was full, and they giving out compensation for these pax for the extra night. I asked the QF checkin
staff why they didn’t just send everyone across and she rolled her eyes and said ‘Cause Headquarters said so’.

Now if I was the CFO I’d probably have a heart attack. Bizarre way of doing business.

Great to read this judgment from VCAT - and a reminder to everyone that just because a contract says something, doesn't mean that it is valid and enforceable
