Tiger Airways Australia to hub at MEL

No airline looking to make a serious impact will use Avalon as a hub. No facilities, no connections and way out for the majority of users. Doubt they would have seriously considered it. If you want to play in the Grand final, it's on at the "G", not Kardinia park.

May be wrong but don't Jet* have an exclusive arrangement with AVV anyway??

Drop like a stone? I think you're being a wee bit optimistic there.

perhaps, though the 8 buck fares from perth to singapore isn't too bad... though I don't expect them from Melbourne to anywhere interesting for that much.

I doubt it, can't imagine that Lindsay Fox would sign up to an exclusive.

Is there any form of a low-cost terminal at Mel (thinking like the old Sydney one) or does Tiger have to use the main terminal (presumably at a high cost)

Yes, but the "taxes" are $150...

I am not too sure of the details of the $8 fare, but even with taxes of $150 you are looking at not much over $300 for a return trip Perth Singapore. That is quite cheap.

Thanks, saved me typing it :)

An option will be that Virgin may be forced to share since they are just renting theirs.... Wonder how they will like that?!

Didn't Virgin operate from a small section outside of the main terminal (MEL)? When they first started. I wonder if that section is still available for Tiger. Similar in Sydney, they oeprated from a seperate terminal just to the left of the current Virgin terminal?

In terms of terminal access the other aspect is whether they will be flying International as well as Domestic.....

I didn't think that Virgin Blue had exclusive access to the terminal it is sharing with Rex. I was under the impression that is was more a multi-user facility.

I don't mean the current facility that Virgin operate from in MEL. Didn't Virgin operate out of a small terminal outside of the main terminal?

I remember flying with Virgin from BNE-ADL around 4 years ago. I had a stopover I think in MEL (Not sure. Will have to chase down some stuff!) and we were in a dingy shed.

This was before Virgin managed to gain the Ansett space.

Yep, that would be the one...:D

Actually, now I think about it, I did have some spare time and went wandering. A few mins later, I ended up at a terminal. But then turned around and went back to the shed. It may have been raining too!

This was well before my AFF days, so I don't know whose terminal it was, and why I went wandering :D

I do remember an old lady on my flight next to me thinking that I was cold and offering her blanket to me ! But apart from that and the friends I met in ADL, I have few memories of the MEL Virgin terminal (even though I traversed it twice) or the service on the plane etc...

And I've worked out it was in April 2002.

I bet the MEL owners have demolished that area now... But if course that are could still exist! I do remember SYD being pretty uncomfy for DJ flights quite a few years ago too.

I think Tiger have the might, backing and guts to really shake up the market. I do wish them the best in keeping the air fair!

Cat fight over air sponsors | Herald Sun

Skipping over all the stuff in the article about AFL sponsoship and Qantas exclusive rights etc etc, near the end of the article we get this:

Tiger Airways announced yesterday it will operate from Melbourne airport's terminal four.

The terminal is separate from the main airport building and Tiger passengers will board aircraft from the apron, not aerobridges.

Tiger CEO Tony Davis said the no-frills terminal would allow efficient check-in and boarding and have retail and convenience facilities.

I am only familiar with terminals 1, 2 and 3, so would I be right in assuming that terminal 4 is the shed that Virgin Blue used to use, or is it something else?

The shed, or as we shall know it as the "Tiger Shack" has some work that needs doing. Anyone with some time would have to walk out of the terminal toward Virgin (lower level) then beyond to come to this space... Won't be back in Mel til Thursday to see it.

I believe Impulse also operated out of this shed before being consumed by QF?
