Would a 30 min Sydney connection work from a BNE-SYD and then SYD-PER flight... Can it be done?

From memory Qantas boards 20 mins before departure and Sydney is pretty easy to get around - but how likely is a delay... That is the question...

Perhaps I'll get the same advice as my earlier query re: Melbourne.

I wouldn't try it. There can be time delays disembarking (gate not available etc, that happened on my last flight x BNE) and QF can board earlier than 20 mins.

Also, it depends on which gates are used.

Will you be doing carryon or booked through luggage?

I'd try a trial booking x BNE to PER, and see what time is allowed for the SYD changeover.

It can be done but not recommended. Obviously it gets worse later in the day.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I agree with JohnK - if it's ontime and you are seated near the front of the aircraft you will be ok - but it's risky. Unless they have retimed the flights on an existing booking also you would have to book it as two tickets and if you miss the subsequent flight they are probably within their rights to say "you were a no show for your original flight and it will be $x00 for a new ticket thanks ChrisCunard" (assuming of course you don't have a booking in a super flexible fare bucket for the SYD-PER sector).

nothing like a tight connection to get the adrenaline pumping...domestic would usually be ok obviously excepting weather or parking delays - just have a back up plan and a changeable fare (ie i probably would only try this in J :))

Thanks all. Yeah it's a J ticket and the problem I have is QF can't tell me definitively what the connection time is.

Customer care said 30 mins is "allowed", telephone sales said 40 and twitter team have said 30 and 40.

Very confused.

Perhaps Red Roo can clarify?

My understanding that MCT in SYD for DOM-DOM was 40 minutes. At least that has been what was told to me the last couple of times I tried to make a 30 minute connection happen (which has always been the afternoon DRW-SYD flight connecting to the last SYD-ADL .... which hasn't ever worked because it always seems to be 40 minutes between the two).

Looks like its definitively 40:

Boarding for domestic flights start 20 mins before departure time, by a 0.01% chance, if you arriving flight comes into QF SYDd gate 11 and the flight to PER departs QF SYDd gate 12/13, you could be lucky, but you never know which gate QF puts their planes into, on arrivals.
Sitting in domestic J could help, as first off.
I have done a 2 hrs between domestic flights, MR ADL to MEL (didn't go out of the domestic secure zone/area-only went to the MEL QPd to get a bite to eat), and then MEL back to ADL.
30 mins definitely I would not play with that. In theory, its possible, but in reality too many variables.
O, and I am shocked that QF would sell domestic to international connections in SYD with 1hr/1hr15mins connection time to get from the QFd to QFi terminal. Maybe they don't want people to use the QFi SYD J lounge!
Sydney Airport website also does not list QF arrival and departure gate info, as T3 where QF departs and arrives is owned and managed by QF, so no tips or no readily available information, as to which gate the arrvial from BNE will be, and the departure gate to PER will be.

Thanks all. I've got a VA flight back with a 40 min "legal" connection so all good.

Not everyone places the same importance on lounge time. Some travellers may just want to get to their destination as fast as possible and are happy with short layovers.

Thank goodness for that. Who wants a lounge jammed full of pax who just want to get to where they're going?
