Maybe I'm lucky (and maybe I shouldn't mention it) but it doesn't seem to apply to me IMHO.

So daughter gets accepted into Charles Sturt University (Wagga) studying Vet Science.

But the journey during the application phase was crazy:

ATAR for CSU Vet = 90
Need the ATAR to qualify for interview
Interview conducted to make sure you like large animals, not a psycopath, etc etc
ATAR + inteview = offer to study Vet Science
CSU give bonus ATAR (up to 5) if candidate affected by illness or for Elite Sports (national or international representation) - only if it significantly affects study in Year 11,12.

Ok so daughter gets ATAR 88
Email from CSU - sorry not eligible for interview
We appeal - did you apply the bonus points for Elite sports as per Elite sports supplementary application.
1 week later - Ok bonus points application successful but still no interview. We are worried that Elite sports may affect your uni study. so cant give you an interview
2 weeks after that - You have been successful in getting to interview stage
2 weeks after that - sorry you passed the interview (i.e. you are not a psycopath and are into large animal) but you are behind higher achieving candidates, so no offer
2 weeks after than - congratulations we would like to offer you a position in Vet Science.

Wonder what happened?. Seems like the whole process is flawed.

I reckon that what happened was that higher ranked applicants declined their offer, probably accepting offers at other universities.

As spaces open up then she moves higher up the list and eventually a spot was available for her.

Good luck to your daughter for her studies.

Could be that students who were offered places declined them. I know when daughter wanted Vet Sci (back at the end of the 90s so things will have moved on), she applied to the three Eastern states that offered the course (Uni Melb, Qld Uni and Uni Syd). She was offered places in all three in the first round so declined Melb and Qld as Sydney was closer to home. In that case I can see the offers being made to those with a lower AST (ATAR).
Your daughter should have received an interview if her ATAR and bonus made her eligible. But guess she is pretty happy that she has been offered a place. Congratulations to her.

Yea I thought that perhaps that some were also given offers at other universities maybe closer to home.
The only mystery is that CSU Vet Sci is geared toward large animal production Vet science and not as much dogs cats and budgies. And the interview was to confirm that the applicants had an prior experience and ongoing interest in large animal production. The other university in NSW offering Vrt Sci (Sydney Uni) does not have that emphasis - more small companion animals with some equine.

It's interesting how Universities now give bonus ATAR points for all sorts of things. Duke of Ed gets you bonus points in some Uni, Regional bonus, elite sports (some classify elite sports as Zone swimming), hardship and illness. Some Give a max of 5 , I've heard Syd Uni can give up to 10 depending on circumstances.

Some universities make offers to students before HSC based on school reports

I keep saying it, but when QLD goes to ATAR that will be a very, very interesting first year. Not only for teachers rolling out the new curriculum, but having to teach towards the new regime of external testing.

Given the kind of school that I teach in, it'll take considerable training in mental fortitude to get my students ready for that kind of high pressure testing. I realise that our southern brethren have been doing it for years now, but I don't know if they think it feels any easier.

On the other hand, for any parents who think IB is kind of the way to go, I guess they'll be feeling a bit better.

On another hand, although everyone keeps saying IT is in short demand, I fear for the continuation of teaching IT subjects at the senior level.

At the risk of starting a subthread that will be split off, if you were about to face a maths or science test, which of the following kinds of tests would you prefer?
  • No calculators, no formula sheet
  • Calculators allowed, no formula sheet
  • Calculators allowed, personally prepared crib sheet allowed
  • Calculators allowed, formula sheet supplied
The idea, of course, is that as you select one of the options lower in the list, the problems on the test would be assumed to be more difficult conceptually. Still, which would you choose?

I once had a COBOL exam with three questions. You chose the question depending on if you wanted an A, B or C. Got half way though answering and the examiner could see I was on the right track so was happy to give an A and send me on my way. Best exam ever.

Rather nice.

Haven't had an exam like that. We had a Java practical exam where we had to produce the code for 2 or 3 programs in 2.5 hours. I finished it in 50 minutes and was allowed to leave. Of course I aced it.

Another odd one was the practical exam for chemical engineering process modelling. We were given an equation system and we had to program it up in Matlab, run the graphs and then submit the code. The kicker was that the test was set for a nominal time of 90 minutes, but for some reason our lecturer tried to give us an incentive by saying that those who finish earlier than the allotted time would receive bonus marks (the amount depended on how long everyone else took).

I finished the test in 40 minutes, submitted and walked out first. It wasn't until the results came out when everyone's results were shown on a timeline with scores that I realised that apparently the test was rather difficult. The next person who submitted after me took close to the 90 minutes, and the test time had been involuntarily extended so that people could have extra time to at least try and finish the test (plenty of people ended up taking close to 2 hours to finish the exam). In the end, although I "beat" everyone rather mercilessly, I only received an extra 15% uplift. At least it helped cover some of the shortfalls in my theory exam.
