It seems most of the communication I have with my teenage sons is via text. This has led me into a whole new language of words, many of which I have to get them to translate into English for me.
Most of course are abbreviations, like cu for see you, or idk for I don't know/care, and I can understand the reason for the shorthand, but why then do they write nah instead of no when it saves one letter?

Extra emphasis. Sort of like the difference between Kein and Nein.

Don't forget to post regular updates for serfty ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if serfty will have an internet black out and not go online until he has watched the match. Will be tough for him not to be online, as he is usually online 24/7.

At least they are communicating with you, unlike some people who just ignore you, those that are older and should know better.

The irony is that - and similar when T9 was around - sometimes it is quicker just to type the whole thing, because with a few key presses autocorrect / suggest (the latter on Androids) offers you the word anyway.

Using abbreviations also runs the risk of the autocorrect being too zealous and "correcting" the short form.

One thing with using long forms - even if more convenient now - is that it is quite easy to exceed the 160 character limit on SMSes. However, many people don't care too much about the costs of SMS, viz. either it's low enough not to bother with or they get them included anyway. In other cases, using messaging apps like iMessage, Whatsapp etc. basically removes such limits, and since most are connected to the data network these days, that's not such a big deal either.

Sounds like a Jim Eoin joke about his introduction to Australia - they said "Jim? We'll call you Jimmy for short."

My youngest does have sms, so she talks to us with abbreviations. Ask a question. Spoken reply "I d k". When I cracked about all the idk in spoken form, as in use the full words please, she started to reply "i d k, I don't know".

It wasn't just idk in general conversation. But I con't remember the other ones she used - maybe b r b.

Anyway, mum put a stop to it. Why don't my daughters listen to me?! lol

I forgot today is Monday.
I'm on holiday so one day just blends into the next.
Is tomorrow Tuesday? IDC lol

As a shift worker I rarely know the actual day, just whether i have a shift today or not and what time. I love having multiple alarms on my phone, I just set them a week ahead.

By way of example, Monday 2000-0400 then Wednesday 0400-1200.

Oh and having a watch with the day and date on it helps.

And now Saturday evening. Weekend goes way too quickly.

Try retirement - it's great. Mondays don't suck any more and every day is a Saturday. The only problem is you don't get the rush you used to about knock-off time in Friday.

I can handle missing the Friday knock-off time rush.

Golf Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and some Sundays. Yep I could just about get used to retirement. Could take a while though. Might have to try it first for 40-50 years to make sure retirement is suited to me. ;)

Any else grow cycads? I'm surprised that my potted effort has sprouted these long 'fiddle backs'.

When our son was a teenager and away at school/uni I had a lot in common with the long suffering husband on Keeping up Appearances who when asked how he got on with his son replied-"We communicate by cheque."
