The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

I'm flying QF1 next week all the way through from SYD to LHR. Is it possible to select different seats for each segment, or will I need to ask at check-in or in the lounge? Looking at ExpertFlyer, there is more availability on the SIN-LHR segment, but I online I appear to only be able to select seats based on availability across both segments.

Similarly, how do upgrades work on this flight? Assuming it's possible to be upgraded on one segment but not the other?

TIA
Once you have checked in you can change your seat via the app for each segment individually and thus have different seats for each leg.

Hi all, Flying MEL-LAX on Saturday. Paid via FFP. Have applied for upgrades to Premium Economy, 2 seats, 76,000 Pts each.

I can see in Gyoza the plane has plenty of room, so fingers crossed for the upgrade.

Question: Online Check-In - Should I Check in or NOT check in - is either more beneficial in getting the Upgrade?

Any thoughts/experience out there.

Fingers crossed...

It makes no difference to upgrade chances, so go ahead as you normally would

76k for Y+ (PE) what's J upgrade in points?

Just tracking my flight, seems the 330 for MEL - SYD QF440 came in as a SYD - MEL QF427. So it's not really a positioning flight.

Anyone know why there's a 330 bounce between syd - mel - syd. Thought the 330 fleet is so thin right now the extra time as maintenance would be better spent in SYD.

Very occasionally, it still does happen.
Have seen this one, as per below.
Usually, its the very last SYD - MEL one, dep SYD just before curfew, arr MEL 23.55pm.
As I stay at hotels, late check in is harder with the DIY for Ibis Budget Melbourne Airport, or late check in, or early check in for the new Ibis at Melbourne Airport (pay extra), this deters me.
But I would love to try the A330 in J for the last time, before QF retires them sooner or later
Guess, Elanshin, if you do like the A330 as I do for Aus dom flights, maybe it might be worth getting these before they are retired, and then everything QFd is the A220.
They might need the 330 to carry on from say, SIN - SYD - MEL, or MEL - SYD - SIN, but dont want to put on "dom pax on int flight", so they just fly the 330 forward and back, maybe with mostly freight.
===
They have also been doing SIN - PER as QFi, then PER - MEL totally as QFd, can tell on flightaware.com, track incoming flight, into PER, its sometimes SIN - PER - MEL, but the PER - MEL is totally a QFd flight.

I think it was 126k.
Partner wants to sit together and a window, so PE the better option than J, for her.

Ended up getting the upgrade confirmed to PE, but they have us allocated separately, 9 rows apart. WTF!?!

Partner (frustratingly) checked us in, so calling Customer Service couldn't change seat allocation..

Need to head to airport now earlier than planned, to discuss with desk.

And Partner now says she would prefer to sit in Economy together, than be separate in PE 😵‍💫🤯. Taking the joy out of flying.

Yeah QF separated wife n I previously on a PE upgrade. Was ample spare seats onboard so we changed.
Pathetic really.

Check Expert flyer, ask here on appropriate thread if you don't have an account. Do dummy booking for PE to se what seats available.

I'd say you'll be fine, you'll sit together, last resort ask a single pax on board to swap. Flyers much more reasonable & common sense than Qantas.

Just uncheck in and restart.

Update - at counter got told we no chance to sit together in PE.
PE was full.

Enquired about downgrade to Economy, possible, but would loose the 150k points.

30 sec later, they were able to get us together in PE, relief.

39 E & F.
Top deck, back row.
No seat D
So accessible from both sides.
(Recomend!)
Win!!

All's well that ends well.
Thanks for reporting back @Champagne Dan perhaps you can review your journey - enjoy!

Hello, my friend had flights Emirates Melb to Singapore first class, Singapore to Vienna via Dubai business. These were changed when Emirates stopped Melb to Singapore flight. Switched to Business class Melb to Dubai then Business Dubai to Vienna.

My friend called Qantas to ask about the refund of points difference as her original flight was first class, or to switch one of the flights to first class. Qantas said they would get back to her.

Now both flights have been moved to waitlisted and when she called they offered a points refund.

I am flying on the same flights and my flights are still secure. We leave in 4 weeks. Does anyone have a solution or phone number she can call? She is bronze and not getting anywhere as yet.

Is this a QF award ticket? MEL-SIN-DXB-VIE changed to MEL-DXB-VIE all on EK
Reads as if the QF phone agent made an error and some how cancelled - changed flights, and now are not confirmed. To get out of the QF error offered a full refund. Sadly not unusual for QF phone agents to make errors on award changes
Email [email protected] and [email protected]

Should get a refund on the points difference.

Another QF error Qantas cancelled my Air France classic award flight without refund or notification - what are my options?

Do we have a thread where we can write about one off QF experiences? I couldn’t find one - so I’m writing this here. Happy to be pointed to the right thread or to have this post moved as the mods see fit.

Just got off QF432 MEL-SYD. Feels like an absolute s-show. The flight is full, as in 0 empty seats. And every pax seem to have more than their allowed carry on allowance. The crew has a tough time rearranging bags, resorting to take some of the bigger bags to be sent to the cargo hold - after all pax have boarded. At the time of writing this service is 20 minutes behind schedule.

More than 20 pax don’t have space in the overhead bins. I’d have expected (naively, perhaps or as afterthought) that QF could have proactively made an announcement at the gate that it is a full flight and to gate check any larger bags or enforce (not sure how) only one carry on per pax. Some pax seem to have bought a lot of stuff (imagine going on a shopping trip and bringing back really large garment bags etc)

Another issue was - for boarding groups 1 and 2 boarding happens via the front door only. I was seated at the back of the plane - my choice in the hopes of getting a shadow. And without any time gap, the rest of the boarding groups were also boarded - this time thru both back and front doors. This led to a larger number of folks seated at the back of the plane (pax in boarding groups other than 1 and 2) to enter the plane from the rear doors and cause a massive confusion, collision and in many instances a deadlock, especially with the pax seated at the back of the plane from boarding groups 1 and 2, who were still trying to get to their seats.

And apparently QF cancelled a later MEL-SYD and moved pax to this one - making this service fully booked. Nothing wrong in consolidating flight services, but QF could have done better by organising baggage and boarding, given that they’d have know about consolidation of flights. It only added to frustrations of customers.

And to add to the misery certain customers chose to be English-ignorant at the most convenient time.

This seems like a customer behavioural issue, but I think QF could have done a bit more proactively to avoid such bad experiences? Not an expert, just a personal experience and observation.

Edit: Crew were really helpful and professional. So that was a huge plus.
