The Operational Upgrade Thread

I googled for this but I couldn't find the answer. If I am allocated (or choose) an exit row seat does this effectively rule me out of the op-up pool? Seems like once a QF staffer confirmed that I am suitable for an exit row seat that upgrading me for operational reasons may be difficult?

I was op-upped at the gate on QF9 MEL-SIN from my exit row seat to Premium Economy. So doesn't seem to rule you out.

Interesting... I'm flying QF CBR-MEL this Fri (booked ages ago) and recently booked my sister (non-QFF) onto the same flight using my points. To my surprise, she has almost the same seat selection options as me. Just selected 4A & 4C on 748 . The only difference between our seat selections is that I can select 4B on my booking whereas it is greyed out for my sister's. I guess QF must link status of the QFFer with the redemption bookings made for families (if that makes sense).

Yes I think so too. When I booked an SFO-SYD flight last year for the OH using my points, he (a NB at the time) was automatically allocated one of those PE seats with Y service, which were normally available for WPs only.

Also pax who are NB or no status travelling on award tickets of WPs get business class tags. I'm talking about the tags that have the word "business" in black on the thermal (paper) bag tags.

Wonder if they give you a refund for the $$$ you paid for the exit row or did you get that gratis?

OMG, I just checked my sister's bag tag (she flew up to CBR last week on classic awards using my points) and it does indeed say Business on it. There you go!

Op-up today BNE-SYD 767 (two other WPs also got it, SG did not).
Had used OLCI then got the new seat assignment when using the card at the gate - BNE still has the old card scanners and needs to replace them pronto, took five or so attempts to get it to read.

Interestingly at SYD I was directed to scan my own card, whereas at BNE the gate agent did it.

There were op-ups aplenty SYD/PER yesterday on the A330 for 14 pax I understand including a CL in S, WP in S/Q/V, SG in K/V/N & even a PS in K.

That sounds like a big oversell of Y. Or maybe QF being very, very generous.

Either way there would've been some happy campers on board.

They will happily oversell whY by the same amount of seats they have avail in J.

Some might argue that in fact it's the passengers who are being very generous helping QF out!

I flew a very very full QF LHR-SIN flight the other day. No opup for me. The SIN-MEL segment was not 100% full and I had an empty seat next to me so that was acceptable (not many people did though).

It was my first A380 flight too. Would have been a nice welcome aboard (and no, I didn't enjoy the journey either; there were no less than 30 children under 6 in the front Y cabin, and they all ran around like the a/c was a creche. Also, what is it with people needing to use the lavs only 20 minutes after take-off? the seatbelt sign went out, and at least 20-40 people suddenly jumped up and queued all the way down to F for the lavs (on both sides of Y)). </rant> ;)

Mrs Subharpoon (NB) & I upgrade to J from Y award seats (exit row pre-selected) CNS-SYD last week.

OPup for Mrs WF (AA ruby) and I (AA EXP) DRW-PER today 30 May on boarding
My first domestic QF OPup though have had domestic upgrades via my QF account.

A large athletic group with group baggage tags
When in gate line there was an announcement for two stand-by people to check with gate desk.

Note: Although checked in at the business check-in counter, our baggage tag was "normal" ie no business or priority indication.

Happily wandering

That would be because it's not an alliance wide benefit, as it is on *A. If you were QF status (SG/WP) or QP then you would have had priority tags.

That being said, being op-up'd to J, you should have got J tags.

Finally my first Op-Up!

MEL-SYD this morning on QF412 and my BP flash red! There were two others a bit of the way in front who went red too and I thought I might miss out, but fear not! Went to the service desk where my new BP was already waiting for me.

Add to that the eggs benedict for breakfast as I was quite content! I'm feeling some QF love lately!

I'm liking the sound of eggs benedict for breakfast. That and the op up is QF spreading the love?

Well it was minus the muffins, but nothing the sourdough bread didn't fix! made for a nice change... i also got the double SC offer too!

Interesting.

I just looked back at my flights last year, and found that I had 8 op-ups in total.
So far this year, I've had one.

Same flight pattern, same fares. I've been WP for a few years in a row now, so that shouldn't be influencing things.

Maybe just someone else's turn? ;)
