The Operational Upgrade Thread

Gee there's a few doctors (of varying sorts!) around here.

Can confirm it didnt work for me (as NB or now as PS).

As kpc says, only use is when they're looking for a doctor on board.

I'm off the PhD variety so it would only help if they were looking for a dissertation on variational analysis of weather radar data... :D

Funny you should say that... :) (no I am not studying that event... but some of my research is investigating conditions conducive to engine flame out in the tropics... well, will be soon! have a look at this )

Back On Topic.. If I were Qantas and looking after my shareholders Op-Upping would be based on that customer value index refered to earlier...
Now a Doctor, Professor etc... dont have a huge impact... All my travel is economy, relying on government money means I have to be very aware of value... A person that organises travel, or regularly flies in the premium classes ( which would have a high correlation with but not always to WP) would be before me or other "prefixed" PAX in the queue...

As Voyages said, what I need is to travel on an oversold flight with only NB + PS on boards and then I have a chance...

I have been op-upped this year on a greater frequency then ever before.

I'm calling 2009 "the year of the op-up"!

I agree with sefty here.

I've lost count of my op-ups this year. Maybe 15 or so.

A lot of SYD-MEL and MEL-SYD.

The most bizzare of all was a KTA-PER on a 734 last week that had 30 pax in Y. Allocated 1A at checkin after doing OLCI. Very weird.

Think it was a training exercise for new FA in the J cabin.

Forgot about this thread!

Finally got my first op-up this year last Friday BNE-SYD. I think my luck for this year has now been exhausted....

as i am a Trademan ( plumber ) i have a certain amount of clients that i work for for this means that the good old barther system is alive and well
imagine captain smiths wife of qantas airlines rings up for help as her husband is away the good old story of i am frantic but i may squeeze you in certainly works
eg
friendly call to captain smith hope all is well, thanks mate oh by the way iam travilling to bali next week
oh give me your flight no and i will look after you and your family
so far i have had upgrades, lounges passes visit to the front of plane extra baggage allowances airport spending money
It is alive and well with both stewards and pilots of all areas
if only i could work for Qantas corporate managers then all would be well.

I was lucky enough to get one of the £215 Ashes tickets from Qantas. Anyway last night I got an op-up on QF9 at the gate in Singapore when my boarding pass got the beep/red light and I was moved from Y to Y+ which was a very pleasant surprise. The flight was completely packed and even with a passenger not joining the flight due to illness there were no free seats.

With my BA tix, I got re-accommodated onto a Qantas service (using the BA flight number)

I also paid 250 pounds to upgrade to WT+ before the re-accommodation, which meant I flew to Australia in PE, and WT+ back to the UK.

Got to the boarding gate in Heathrow, and BP went "Beep". Got handed a J boarding pass to BKK, and a PE bp from BKK-SYD.

Return journey was in WT+.

I got an op-up on Friday arvo. QF 542 SYD-BNE. Both Mrs Batesy & I were upgraded to J. 4A & 4B.

I had checked in on-line earlier but not printed BP's. Upon requesting BP's at the Sydney business lounge we were advised that both of us had been upgraded. I am Gold and Mrs Batesy is Platinum.
I thanked the lounge check in agent heartlily and prepared for a few nicer wines and the better legroom.

17:35 flight departure and a long weekend in NSW were my reasoning on why the flight was so full which got us our upgrade. However who really knows!!

Still forgetting about this thread and my luck for this year has not been exhausted yet.

On the last flight of recent Oneworld award and op-up (both my father and I) to business class on PER-SYD flight on an international configured A330. :D

And then another op-up to business class 3 days later on SYD-BNE flight. :D

A friend of mine on the weekend did PER-MEL-SYD (needing to stop in via MEL for a specific reason) and was offered 3 different times (via phone calls and at check-in) to take the direct flight to SYD, and be upgraded to J as well. Given they needed to be in MEL they said no, and ended up with an upgrade to J PER-MEL anyway

I received an op-up over the weekend; SYD-MEL. SYD's seamless transfer queue was an hour-and-a-half long: thank goodness for status - went straight through. There were announcements that if the wait caused you to miss your flight you would be accommodated on a later flight - which I suspect is why I was upgraded (to accommodate a pax having missed an earlier flight). School holidays, I believe.

I know of a recent similar happening on the same route ;)

Mrs Paddy and I were travelling on QF11 in Why, Sat 3rd Oct and about 2hrs into the flight were bumped to Why+ as a number of Avods weren't working and they wanted to move people in Why around.

Apparently Gold was enough as all the Plats had already been moved!

Thank you QF!

Now I'm travelling deep in Why on 24th back from NYC and that's the one I need the upgrade on. Booked in O class so can't use points... hoping being Plat by then will help!

Paddy

Mrs Djf scored two op ups on MEL-BNE / BNE-MEL a couple of weeks ago on a V/N class fare - starting to make me regret using AA instead of QFF given that I'm never likely to see one of those sweet (and seemingly regular of late) op ups!

Oh well, maybe I'll be in with a sliver of a chance if she makes PG. :)

LHR-HKG with Qantas.

Booked in T class.

Boarding pass went beep at the gate and a new one presented for a J seat.

There were quite a few op-ups (the pile of torn up bp's was quite a few high).
