The Operational Upgrade Thread

I am sure we will get clarification from the originator should there still be any confusion, he is probably enjoying his blissful J seat as we speak, completely unaware as to the alternate meanings of that phrase, as I was until I googled it!

Didn't realise there's a dedicated thread for op ups, so I'll simply re-post from the totally OT thread to provide another data point. Well, I got my first ever op up on QF yesterday on QF73 SYD-SFO. I was booked in PE (T class - PE sale fare ex-SFO) and got upgraded to J. I got the upgrade at the gate, gotta love that beep sound along with a "you've got a seat change" from the gate agent. Prior to this I was booked in a Skybed with PE service, so a rather small op up in the scheme of things, but an op up nevertheless. :)

Having been a QF FFer since 1988 today I scored my first domestic op-up. :p:p
It was on QF759 SYD - ADL - chock-a-block 767 and I got lucky before check-in. :mrgreen::mrgreen:
Felt like I'd won lotto.
Still smiling. :p
Thank you Alan

First dom for 2010
Sunday 2.15pm BNE-SYD on a 767 on my last Amex Qantas free flight - happened at baccgage check.

Still 4 seats spare in J but Y looked chockers. Couple i knew (WP and SG on the same PNR) also got upped.
Travelling to BNE again Thu/Fri so hoping for lots of schoolies on the plane and another upg.

I think I had the worlds shortest op up. Checked in at the machine in Brisbane and instead of my usual 4A/4C I got 3A. Didn't think much of it as I fly around 60 domestic sectors a year and probably get an average of 5 or so upgrades. Wandered up to the gate and BP machine let out a funny beep. Told to go to counter which I did and handed over my BP. The lady behind the counter muttered something about there being a problem and gave me a new boarding pass.

I didn't even look at it as the cabin crew were waiting for me to board. Showed the cabin crew at door and noticed it was 23E (or similar don't remember exact number except it was 2 rows from back in the middle between two big guys). Noticed a deadheading flight crew member in 3A and that 4A was empty. Turned around to the cabin attendant and asked can I just sit there. She said no as it was taken. I looked behind her and someone who obviously knew the cabin crew came and sat down in 4A.

I made my way to the seat and squeezed in (and of course no where to put my bag or computer). To add to the experience the guy in the aisle seat split his coffee on me :-(.

What ticked me off was not losing 3A (I have no problem flight crew being rested before a flight) but being kicked out of the row 4 :-(

Awful… and if the pax knew the FA’s and got preferential seating because of that it’s even worse, but would be hard to prove I’m sure. I’d still make a complaint if I was in your position some day, as I’d feel like they didn’t care much for my loyalty.

Had another op-up yesterday.

QF 539, BNE-SYD.

Chose 25A at booking time.
Changed to 23A at T-80.
Op-Up to 1F at check in.

Didn't really enjoy it as much as I might have - QF539 was over an hour late into SYD, which meant I spent the entire flight worrying about missing my SYD-WGA connection (the last of the day), and spending another night at the airport HI.

I always catch QF539 instead of QF541 (the normal connecting flight) these days to try to avoid that, and of course 541 left before us ....

Anyway, thankfully the SYD-WGA flight was also running a bit behind so I just made it.

Just checked in for QF38 WLG-MEL.

Booked O class fare. NZ$307 for WLG-MEL-CBR. Had seat 4C from booking time.

When I checked in I was given a J BP for seat 1D. No complaints from me.

I had an inkling that something had happened when my seat started showing vacant on E/F and the flight was at J0 Y0.

A good outcome. I actually flew J over here but couldnt bring myself to pay NZ$1700 for the return trip with row 4 vacant and NZ$300

A few interesting points on this:

#1 - I had 1D, with 1F empty. 1F was the only empty seat in the J cabin.
#2 - there ended up being 27 empty seats in Y according to E/F, so Y cabin can't have been oversold unless a lot of pax didn't show.

Seat map: QF38 - WLG-MEL seat map... in posted pics

I am now curious for the reason for the op up. But in any case, it was my first so no complaints :)
