The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

What vaccinated population would that be? I'm going to bet that it stagnates at 50-60%.

There won't be any economy of scale if any form of quarantine is required. That means that airlines won't be able to gear up, nor will the pricing be any less than astronomical.
Well I am being my usual optimistic self. I will bet you we get to 70% at least before it stagnates and then hopefully they will whip out some sticks.

I bow to your superior knowledge of airline economies, but let’s wait and see what happens. Optimism, positive waves - we need more of it :)

107, 676 vaccinations performed on Sat 24th July.
That's a good figure for the weekend. They need to do more to get that figure up higher, but good progress at least.

When Monday's figures are released on Tuesday we should have reached 1/6 of the 16+ population fully vaccinated.

Indications from the PM's press conference today that 12-15 y.o. vaccinations will probably be school-based. The expectation is still that everyone, including 12-15, will be offered a vaccine by the end of the year.

16.13% today - that’s nearly 1/6.

Nearly, but 16.67 is 1/6 and with vaccinations on Sundays lower usually we probably won’t reach that figure when today’s numbers are released tomorrow.
We really need to get Saturday and Sunday numbers up, but probably not possible with GP clinics closed. In Canberra the GP led Respiratory Clinic runs Saturday and Sunday and has a massive number of appointments (relatively speaking). 5 vaccination clinics and appointments every 10 minutes. State run clinics run all weekend as well, so there is only a small drop in vaccination numbers.

GP's and Pharmacies were 46,358 doses on Saturday.

One good thing about adding more Pharmacies is that they can vaccinate on weekends.

But they will be really low tomorrow……. Not knocking GPs they do a good job and fill a need, but we need Saturday and especially Sunday to be way better to get the vaccination effort really moving, once we have enough vaccine. I agree pharmacies are going to be a really good addition, especially for the younger cohort.

I would think the majority of Canberra’s GP total for Saturday would be coming from the respiratory clinic.

Greg Hunt last week was alluding to an incentive (hopefully a new item number) to get more GPs to open on weekends…. This would be a great idea and super fast to implement

Mr Seat 0A used a Saturday appointment at the Respiratory Clinic in Tuggers. I booked it for him the Thursday before and there were a lot of appointments. He’s a self employed contractor, and does not get paid if he does not work, which is why he chose Saturday. I suspect a lot of employee workers want to get the shot when they can take sick leave rather than mess up their weekend if they get any side effects.

Definitely different needs. Fridays are often a lower day, presumably for that reason - people don’t want to mess up their weekends.

EDIT - just shows how spoilt we are here. “Oh - I don’t want to vaccinate on a weekend as it might stop my weekend plans”. Vs a few months ago in the USA and UK where people would take whatever appointment they could get whenever they could get it, because they didn’t want to die…..

Don't forget the AZ jab can have side effects for some people, and the weekend after the Friday jab is needed to recover from any of these (if they occur).

I deliberately booked both my shots on a Friday so I had the weekend to recover. Self employed so no official sick leave.

The Melbourne GP clinic where I had my AZ and my husband had his first Pfizer (today) only does these on Sundays. They are fully booked in advance. There is an interest and it seems to me that they are running it this way so the vaccine assembly line doesn’t interfere with their general practice (many people, including ourselves, are not regular patients of this clinic).

Not supported by overseas experience, around 50-60% and take up definitely starts to stagnate. The US even struggling to get over 50% fully vaccinated and they certainly have both carrots and sticks. Optimism won’t change these factors.

I had problems on my first shot but nothing on the second.

I don’t think you can remotely compare Australia to USA where the pandemic and vaccination has been hugely politicised. A much more valid comparison would be the UK.

Anyway in a few months we will no longer be hypothesising - we will have real life statistics and trends…..

EDIT. Just went and looked up the UK stats - For over 18s it’s 88% with a first dose and 70% fully vaccinated - something to aim for….

Even in the USA for over 18s it’s 69% with 1 dose and 60% fully vaccinated - huge differences between the various states though because of politics

Stats for the UK are actually not that different to the US. As for excluding 18 and under it’s not as if they don’t both get and more importantly when we are talking Delta spread the virus.

If you are going to quote the UK experience you should also mention the fact that they themselves don’t see 70% vaccinated is good enough and have started a push to vaccinate down to 12.

Also if we are going to make comparisons, well OZ is not the UK either. There are many parts of our culture more aligned to the US, the UK have the common good ingrained since the Blitz, whereas here a bit of disrespect for authority is regarded as a positive of the Australian character, and of course their COVID experience is totally different to ours too. You can’t just cherry pick the bits you want to hear if you are making comparisons.

To be honest I don’t see any point fighting about it. As I said earlier in a few months we will know how we are going…….I will stick to my optimism, you can stick to your pessimism and we will have an outcome.
