The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Absolutely appalling behaviour of the Feds to not put in place multiple vaccines 18 months ago as practically every other western country has done!
I'd love your gift of hindsight šŸ˜‚

But we are dealing with the facts as they stand today. Regardless of how we got there as that ain't helping us right now. We have plenty of TGA approved vaccination stuff. Let's just roll that out hey?

Well yes! Let the Feds roll our vaccinations! But they have refused to supply QLD. Thereā€™s your argument right there.

They have not refused supply. They have plenty of AZ and currently Pfizer is in short supply everywhere. The TGA has approved both Vax to be administered to all adults. They are the legal authority here. ATAGI provides advice. Which authorities seem able to pick and choose according to their circumstances it seems.

And a compliment to QLD they are doing quite well per capita in vaccine distribution, but that probably means they haven't been planning their supply well (ie, handing too many out) so are running out.

Apparently they give 5 weeks notice of what doses they will receive, so you shouldn't really run out like QLD are claiming.

Just in my inbox from the AMA regarding the AZ update to under 40 being able to get from GP. They are supportive.
ā€œThe change merely removes the restriction and allows all adult Australians access to the approved vaccine. It gives GPs the opportunity to provide the AZ vaccine if this is the patient preference, as long as the risks and benefits have been discussed and the patient has provided informed consent.ā€

And the major Medical Indemnity Insurers also contacted all their relevant members and let them know they are covered for AZ as well so this is good news.

The rollout has been awfully slow over there. In their presser today they boasted administering 17,000 doses in a single day. Let that sink in for a moment, 17,000 doses for a population of nearly 5 million. This is not something to be proud about never mind boast about. At that rate it will take them approximately 600 days to fully vaccinate everyone. Meanwhile, early on the vaccine program in Ontario, Canada the Premier was mocked for boasting 100,000 doses being administered in a day. Meanwhile, the commonwealth is saying they can get 2 million doses of AstraZeneca ready every week for distribution, potentially closing this protection deficit we live in relatively quickly. We need to pull our socks up, folks!

When obvious problems Moderna supplies have been added due to start in the next 3 months.

However Moderna originally approached the Feds last year and Feds said no thanks. We could have started receiving Moderna at the same time as Pfizer BUT they assumed AZ would do the heavy lifting and cant help but think that was a purely $ decision.

FYI NZ approved and had orders for other vacines (ive posted the lik before), they just cancelled them when they managed to secure sufficient Pfizer for everyone.

Since this part does not really relate to the vaccine (don't want to upset the mods), I'll continue..

18 months ago was Dec 30, 2019.

It was late January 2020 before Covid was identified by the Western world.

Then there were many, many months of people saying "There's never been a coronavirus vaccine"

Your timeline is off with the fairies.
Ah, donā€™t nit pick. 12-14 months ago is sufficient. The point is the Feds stuffed up the ordering of vaccines. Other countries didnā€™t. Thatā€™s why we are STILL only 5.8% fully vaccinated.

Try telling that to the families of the 900+ Australians who have died from COVID, or the countless businesses that rely on travel and tourism to stay afloat!

Weā€™ve got to stop with this ā€œ900 people died from COVIDā€ line. Based on our own data, Australiaā€™s death rate is significantly higher than the global average and thatā€™s even with our unbelievably high testing rate. I donā€™t believe any other country has the low positivity rate of Australia (because of our massively high testing program).

Almost all of the nursing home deaths were not directly attributed to covid. Many of those people did not receive adequate treatment as they were in end of life care (many over 90 years old) with multiple other medical issues. A fart in the wrong direction would have taken them down. Any death is sad, but 1/3 of the nursing home population dies each year so itā€™s not unexpected. Using these statistics significantly warps data that politicians then go on to use.

Per population Qld isn't doing so well according to Covid live
Interestingly covid19data had SA and WA switched in terms of placings on per capita. I donā€™t know which is right.

Can we agree that any politician the ever tries out that line again should be forced to stand in a town square whilst covid positive people cough on them.

Let's see them say "it's not a race" again after that.
I've got a better idea.

No politician can speak of vaccines until the pandemic is over.

Leave it to the health professionals.

Though the Health Minister back then said Moderna refused to negotiate. They had already secured supplies of Pfizer at the time so weren't desperate for another mRNA vaccine.

People have to remember that last year, AZ (Oxford as we then called it) was the absolute stand out as far as vaccine candidates go and was generally considered to be the best chance of success. The mRNA vax tech is brand new and nobody was betting their collective houses on it. We still haven't let the mRNA side effect issue play out and it could well be in the same position as AZ in three months.

We already had the failed UQ vax which we then switched to AZ.

There's actually not that many countries with a local manufacturing capability - it's unfortunate the AZ had the side effect it did, but it's still a working vaccine that many countries would desperately take off our hands if we don't want them.

They've also done pretty well to get the additional Pfizer doses which will start increasing from next month.

This could have been far, far worse.

Well today well and truly confirmed why we have the slowest vaccine roll out in the OECD. A disaster of monumental proportions as I predicted many months ago. Very funny to look back at the people in this thread telling me Australia was doing well on the vaccine front and there's nothing to worry about LOL.
Yes, Australia doing well with vaccinations according the Feds. Oh, and it is not race.

Ah nup. I save distaste for those who are offered a vaccination and donā€™t take that up
Could not agree more, on this site another member @mivy has posted on many threads I just want to get vaccinated but could not. Once the rules were changed this individual has posted the AZ appointment has been confirmed. I commend @mivy for putting "one's money with their mouth is"

@Lynda2475 to the best of my knowledge you are not formally medically trained. Your incessant posting on vaccines and who should get what, references to studies/ papers, friends in the US and the list just goes on adds no value. Everybody has an opinion but some of your posts are as about helpful to improving the vaccine take up as AP's statement to QLD earlier today.

Nope. Feds dropped the ball. Putting all our eggs in four picks was appalling decision. Other countries backed 8-12, not us. Just incompetent.

Weā€™ve got to stop with this ā€œ900 people died from COVIDā€ line

The ABS published a report in August last year, which showed that 72.7% of Covid death had one or more co-morbidities:

The case fatality rates in under 70s that are amongst the best, unfortunately workers bringing Covid into Aged Care badly skewed the total in over 70s and there is no way to know how many of them would have succumbed to thos conditions or flu (which was lamost non existent last year) if not for Covid.
