The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Master FM (San Francisco) will be getting vaccinated tomorrow. Feeling very left out :). Dr FM (34) fully vaccinated with Pfizer. Ms FM (29) and husband (31) first AZ jab. Master FM (32) about to be vaccinated. Mr FM and I (68 and nearly 69) not even on the radar.......
You are obviously far too healthy for your own good. Have you no not-as-yet-diagnosed medical issues that may qualify. 😉

Well I did have a stroke - but it had no symptoms and they only discovered I had had one when they did an MRI for something totally unrelated. Maybe I should try and leverage off that - hmm - talk to GP. :) :)

I notice todays charts have breakdown of Commonwealth doses by state again, which were missing from yesterdays release.

Interesting that Feds have delivered more aged care doses in total in Qld than Vic - does Queensland have more people in aged care?

Time for the weekly report on the vaccination stakes. It has been a slower week, but we have now managed to scoot past Sri Lanka. Indonesia is definitely a target for next week and also making it into the top half of the field - only a few places off currently.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good media click bait frenzy.

Yes, I think it's looking pretty good, all things considered

Unfortunately that chart is misleading as it omits the 6 countries with the best results, and the many many others that are well ahead of Australia (there are 90 countries with higher stats per 100 than Australia).

There are developing nations significantly out performing us, we should be doing much better. Two months in, 1A should hwve been 100% complete,

Could you please provide the detail on which vaccines these nations are providing to their citizens, along with their daily case and death numbers.

The link i provided has other charts with that info, feel free to read for yourself or do your own research. The western countries on the list ahead of us are mostly using Pfizer and Moderna.

Given our non existant community cases and lack of deaths we should be able to better organise our resources to more efficiently dispense the doses we have. Sure we have some delayed deliveries but we arent deploying the doses we do have as quickly as they could be if the approach was better organised.

But isn't it apples vs oranges?

The chart @jjonnboy posted was looking at speed of rollout (since first vaccination) vs overall total vaccination rate. Australia started late, but what the chart shows but 50 days in where the country is at vs other countries 50 days in.

But what are we going to do now 😂 🥴 🤪

Breaking: Blood clots as prevalent with Pfizer and Moderna vaccine as with AstraZeneca's: new study

A study by Oxford University found the number of people who receive blood clots after getting vaccinated with a coronavirus vaccine are about the same for those who get Pfizer and Moderna MRNA vaccines as they are for the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The fact that we are moving up the vaccination rankings says that we are vaccinating faster than all the counties we are overtaking. To date it has been easy, but in coming weeks it will be interesting to see if we can continue our progress. Russia is only 17 places ahead of us and China 22.

looks like all the athletes going off to the Olympics and their support staff will be jumping the queue. Given their age and the time frame it will have to be Pfizer. Part of me is annoyed, but I can see why they are considering it......

The Oympics really should be cacnelled its a super spreader event waiting to happen and Japan currently has rising case load before importing even more. They were cancelled during WWI and WW2, and Covid is impacting the world more widely than ether of those wars.

A few months ago the AOC was towing the line stating that no Athlete or Official would be jumping the queue for a vaccination and yet now they are. Very disappointing.

But isn't it apples vs oranges?

Not enturely the 6 countries with the highest vaccination rates all had really speedy roll-outs. There is zero excuse for leaving Israel off that chart (all the data is available) but by their own noted admission its because it would highlight how significantly slower we have been.

The more telling charts would be doses given per doses received in in that period and first & secondd dose lines for same period. In first 50 days Israel had given a decent number of people both doses.

Australia has not been getting the doses we have into people fast enough and not always into the arms that should be a priority. The Feds are stubbonrly sticking with using Pfizer for aged care instead of pivoting and giving those Pfizer doses to the 1Bs under 50, and AZ to any aged care residents who had yet to start their Pfizer course.

Unfortunately that chart is misleading
Unfortunately, I cannot agree that it is misleading. Selective, yes. I assume the data points on which it is based are valid? It only serves to illustrate similar profiles of certain countries as listed. Any inference beyond that probably only serves some of the inflexible narratives, that the rollout is a shambles, disaster or the like.

The selective nature is why it is misleading, in that it makes progress looks better than it is by omitting Israel (the star performer) in particular. I never said the data points werent correct, but the coutries they chose to include/exclude were defintely chosen to provide for a positive spin.

The Feds have periodically released data on doses delivered vs doses admisntered, this is what we need to look at, as the gap between those numbers should be reducing, over time we should be eponentially gettign more efficient at rolling out the doses we have.

I don't think thousands of athletes getting vaccinated is going to make a material impact on the speed of a rollout where several times that are vaccinated each week.

I fully expect that certainly by the time we get to 2B (if not before) that professional athletes in general may well get priority e.g. footy players, cricketers, netball players etc. The financial impact of any disruption to professional sport is significant.

From 5/7/20
‘Israel is in a state of emergency due to a resurgent coronavirus outbreak, and additional steps are needed to try to stem the spread, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.’

Israel rolled the dice because they needed to. They started under emergency use authorisation, managed to luck out on choosing Pfizer (for now), had access to early supply, and paid a significant premium for that supply, in a country 500km x 150km. Good on them, but that wasn’t us.
