Back when...........

icarus, you sound suspiciously like someone I know  :D.

Eek, BlacKnox, that could be embarrassing. Have sent you a private message, in case you're right!

My first thought was "What are the chances?" but then I realised from personal experience, probably quite good....

yes that has happened to me numerious times.. When you been out the night before and the bossman deliberately buys all your drinks.. Its a trap I won't fall into again

Watch out for conference sponsors that open tabs at 2 in the morning as well :)

Conferences I've always found are a great way to meet people in your field.

Yes, but you won't get much out of sessions after a night of binge drinking.

HOWEVER:
There are always those who taken themselves and their work far to seriously. I work in an area of science which is considered (mainly by its own partcipants) as being very rigorous. I won't tell you which one though that would really be giving it away. I've usually regarded these people as being SNIPPERS..

Seems you had some unpleasant experiences but in the end, presentations are also about discussing and challenging work. I have seen far too many presentations trying to sell old stuff or stuff that was based on (at best) questionable research. In my field there certainly is a lack of this kind of critical evaluation.

Well with 2 more conferences and another trip for work. Things are drawing to a close for 2005.

At least 5 conferences on the calender for next year.

How many conferences do you guys get up in a year?

The largest I've heard was 20 from a guy I meet here in CHC...

I don't think I could sit through 20 conferences in a year. 2 or 3 is enough for me.

Well last year i went to 13...
This was a bit better with only 8 (including the 2 coming up).
May have to be 9 :( depends on what the boss has to say for himself.
If i do go, I'll have to fly back to BNE from CHC via SYD
wait 10 mins and jump on a flight down south..
Might make gold this year.. you never know you luck in the big city

oh and to Nut Case.. you recently posted a spoof letter from Geoff dixon..
Let me put it this way.. All my travel is paid for using your tax dollars..

A friend of mine in Tokyo will have done 28 conferences by year end (speaking at all), and he's not an academic. Yes he's in IT (sort of), and yes I'd hate to be him :!:

Hell for bad scientists is to traverse the world and attend bad conferences for all eternity!

Rather wish the conferences would slow down so i can get some real work down.. But Its also handy to get away for abit longer before and after to do some then

I have two large Conferences to go to each year, that generally require travel and hotel stays.

The first, my industry Conference, is on the Gold Coast this year. Alas, no flights but get some Hilton stay credit (for staying at Conrad Jupiters).

The second, my major suppliers Conference, is in Perth in January. I pay for flights, they pay for accom. This year stayin at Holiday Inn next to Burswood Casino.

Apart from those, I try hard not to become a Conference junkie. Don't think they're value...there are too many in my industry. I tend to think like NM
