Hi,

Does anyone know roughly or could point me to web site that explains how much the taxes and charges are for a frequent flyer flight between Brisbane and Cairns return? I've tried going to the qantas site and selecting the awards flight, but it never mentions how much it is going to be and I'd rather not go through with the booking until I find out how much it is.

Thanks.

Booked a redeal back in May for July, charges on the invoice are Fare $112.00, Taxes/Charges $66.83, GST $17.88

Why is the GST not 10% of the fare.. don't tell me we pay gst on tax.. Isn't that banned in the Magna Carta or something?

No GST payable on taxes. But there is GST payable on surcharges, levies and fees. And most of what we commonly call taxes on airline fares are actually surcharges, levies or fees rather than taxes.

Examples that add GST: Fuel Surcharge, Safety and Security Charge (WG), Passenger Services Charge (QR)

Pardon my ignorance, but whats the difference between a 'tax' and a 'levy' or 'surcharge' or 'fee'?

What's to stop the government saying "no new taxes" and then bumping up a levy or a surcharge?

Taxes are imposed by the government. This includes GST on all flights, and departures tax on international flights.

Surcharges, levies and fees are imposed by the airline, to make it look as if they're keeping fares low, but it's all their nasty suppliers that are increasing costs (and also so they can recover costs on award flights as well  ). Examples of these include fuel surcharges, recovery of airport imposed passenger charges (which I'm sure airlines used to absorb as part of the ticket cost), insurance surcharges introduced after 9-11, and anything else that might take an airlines fancy at any point in time.

Now one thing I don't know if the noise taxes/levies imposed at SYD and ADL are surcharges or taxes!

Some levies are imposed by the airport owners, so not all come from the airlines. The airlines just choose to pass them on to us so as to maintain the appearance of low fares, rather than including it as a cost of opertions and including it in the airfare.

I beleive it is considered a Surcharge even though it's termed "NOISE LEVY TAX"; before GST it showed as QK3.40 on paper tickets. After GST, it became QK3.74.

These days it is generally shown sans GST with a separate total GST entry; I believe this is merely to confuse the average PAX.
