SYD Express immigration

I returned from HKG on 2 April on the VS flight and was handed the express card by the flight crew. I then bought duty free and proceeded to get through immigration pretty quickly. I then had to wait for about 10 minutes at the oversized to get my golf clubs. I then proceeded to the express quarantine lane, but they said golf clubs can not come through express, even though I had marked "No" to questions 1-10.
I then explained that they were new, and then straight through!

A word of advice, HKG airside duty free will NOT sell booze or liquids to ANYONE flying to Australia (or the US). After presenting the boarding pass to the VS staff at the gate, there is another inspection desk where you must leave all LAG's, including water etc!!!! This desk is only about 20 meters from the entrance to the plane!!

My wonder now is whether it is worthwhile using it - I assume it only covers immigration and not quarantine? I tend to use the Duty Free lane at SYD as it is a good opportunity to stock up and I then get through pretty quickly - is there going to be much advantage using this express lane?

The inbound e has a line for immigration as well as for quarantine. Especially in busy periods it's very worthwhile.

If you use the e lane, they will take your card. if it's quiet, use the normal line and save the e card for when they don't give you one.

What an absolute waste of time and money. So you are not allowed to take water onto the aircraft and then when you hassle the crew throughout the flight for fluids they treat you as if you are a criminal.

A couple of weeks ago in the SIN F lounge returning to Australia I witnessed a bloke go up to the staff and ask for a 1 litre bottle of still water to take with him. They obliged and he put it in his carry on bag. Little did he know that he would lose it at the gate. I felt like going up to him to tell him that it will not pass through security but thought better of it.

Hopefully this insanity will end soon and we will be able to resume our normal routines....

Last night, flying back from SIN on SQ 231 from T3, they did not require me to remove the liquids from my bag, only laptop and mobile phone. I had also bought soe makeup (yeah yeah) for my daughter and they put it in a clear plastic bag, and when I said I'd have to integrate it into my existing liquids bad, they said I didn't have to...This is coming to Oz, who have been particularly paranoid about the inbound liquids nonsense.

So maybe things are slowly starting to change...this is only 2 weeks after I flew from T3 to HKG, when I did have to take liquids out of the bag.

How do the quarantine people know you have an e card when the immigration person takes the e card? Or did I miss something?

Immigration dont take the ecard.

How do you use the APEC/crew or express immigration line if you don't show immigration the card?

sorry i've never got one before... but I should be getting one when flying LAX-SYD!

Customs/Immigration only look at the card, and then AQIS (Quarantine) actually take it off you, along with the landing card. This way they check that you have answered No to Q's1-10.

You show immigration both the ecard and the inbound arrivals card that you must complete. They will hand both back to you to take to customs/quarantine. Look for the e lane as you go to exit (typically at the far right [sorry, originally posted left, but meant right!]).

I was able to use the express arrival card at quarantine even though I answered yes to Question 1. The worst that can happen is that they will send you to the normal quarantine queue. YMMV.

It is at the far left if you are travelling non one world (i.e VS etc - arrivals areas C/D.

A couple of recent experiences with the express system capped off with my last arrival on Sunday 24th August:

  • The last two time I have used MEL First checkin, I have been given both departure and arrival express cards.
  • Inbound in WHY for my more recent flights; I was not given an express card. They were only handed the passes out to J pax.
  • Since June I have always been x-rayed, express card or not.
Now for last Sunday week; landing around 8:10pm two hours delayed on QF134; pulling up beside a just landed QF30 unloading baggage. There ware also aircraft arrivals from Emirates, Malaysia and Thai air lines. When I reached the immigration hall, there would have been over a thousand people queued up ... these queues wound out past the configurable "tape" aisles and 50 metres up beside the duty free.

On the left part of the immigration there were two special queues,:
  • Far left: Aircrew/APEC
  • To the right of that: express.

Smartgate was closed for renovations.

The aircrew queued was full up; some 50-60 people in crew uniform waiting in single file stretching out past the end.

I could see no-one in the express queue; but it did have a right turn down the end. I follwed, walking down past the aircrew; when I reached the end and turned right I found I was behind four people. (2 in wheelchairs) The express pass was a godsend; I only had to wait a few minutes.

Then I proceeded down to the baggage hall; there were as many people there as were queued in immigration.

Here I found the use for the express passes past immigration has diminished.

The only direct outs were a few PAX picked out and given a green stamp while queued/awaiting luggage in the manner mentioned earlier in this thread.

In the centre of the baggage hall, there were two queues about 40 metres long stretching up between the middle baggage carousels before vaguely washing up against the steps coming down from the immigration hall.

As I had no checked luggage I approached one of the roaming officers and asked about the express card. I was told to join the right of the two queues between the carousels. There were about 50 people in front of me with this queue before arriving at a point where there were two staff assessing each PAX as they came down; being sent to "queues" 1, 2, 3, 4 or straight out!

I was sent to #4 on the right which had another queue about 30 PAX long before some additional x-ray machines had been located. I had used one of these about two weeks earlier when I was on the the PX arriving. I was able to keep my express pass.

Queue #1 leads to secondary screening where baggage is searched and I could see it was about half full with ~50 people in it heading off to the left. Queues 2 & 3 were crammed with people heading slowly off to the left beyond the #1 queue, down to the end, back up a bit and around the corner into the x-ray hall.

All were bing assessed; as I turned to #4, behind me there were three Qantas flight crew together, one was sent straight out, another was sent to queue #4 and another was sent to aisle #2 (she looked Shocked).

I was finally out and heading to the SkyBus at 9:45pm ...

The whole process took over ½ an hour, more than six times what it took earlier last month.

I was certainly thankful for the express card as I saved me at least another ¾ hour.

Took a gamble at immigration in SYD on return from LAX last week and it paid off.

I have an APEC card but have never used it for SYD inbound, because the immigration queues have always been non-existant. This time they were small, but there (average queue about 5 people).

The airline crew/APEC queue had about 10 crew members (about double the size of the other queues), but I thought I'd try it anyway.

Sure enough - my queue moved a lot quicker, and they got through the 10 of us faster than the regular queues got through 5 passengers. :)

I think I'll use the APEC queue from now on (OK, I also enjoy the airline crew trying to tell me off for using "their" line ;)).

Cheers,
- Febs.

serfty - my experience coming in on QF30 back in July certainly almost mirrors your experience. We appeared to be the only flight at immigration and express lane was up and running, however post immigration was a total zoo and myself and some other J/F pax had difficulty trying to locate the express lane for customs. According to a Qantas staffer who was just as frustrated as we were and whom encouraged us all to send in complaints, Melbourne Airport had made a unilateral decision to not operate the express lane at customs that day. Eventually after much collective lobbying from ground reps of a few different airlines, the express lane was set up. All those holding the express lane cards as well as those fitting the "no worries" profile were directed there but not before having to queue up with the hoi polloi to the queue sorting bouncer - saved me about an hour nevertheless.

Yes. Your 3 years starts from the date of issue of the first card.

that worked in my favour as the countries that hadn't cleared yet at the time of requesting the interim weren't ones that I would need to travel to anyway! so I got the use the benefits of the card sooner! I even requested 2 interim cards before I received the complete one!
