I have noticed that there are QF flights landing at SYD prior to 6am. According to the QF arrivals info on the QF website QF6 landed at 5:18am and was actually 8 minutes late this morning. I thought that curfew lifted at 6am?? I live under the flightpath for the smaller runway in botany bay (north of the airport) and don't normally hear any aircraft until 6am.

I would guess that if they can't make it they land somewhere else. I don't believe QF can avoid the fine by fiddling the figures!

When arriving on the QF6 (see thread link in previous post) it was scheduled to arrive prior to 6am. On approach to Sydney we had to circle near Newcastle for an hour as the winds prevented us from landing with a Botany approach. So I guess it depends on the conditions that morning.

Now showing 8.10pm estimated departure and an ETA of 1.55am. Ouch. What happens to the curfew? Does QF simply pay the fine?

Don't worry there time will be up soon.... to become coke cans or freighters... i would guess with more 744's soon to be on the market (SQ guy told me they plan to retire all by 2010/2011) i dount many would look at a 743 except for spare parts.

I would also guess its just a case of a lot of bad luck in a short period with aircraft going un-servicable.

I imagine that they will either:

1) Apply for an exemption
2) Land somewhere else (MEL, maybe even ADL)
3) Stay in PER Till it will arive after the curfew is lifted
4) Stay in PER if the crew ges out of hours

i was in a DJ flight a few years ago from BNE that was delayed by bad weather and it was touch and go as to whether we would make it in by 11pm.

there was a fair bit of circling Botany Bay and then it struck 11, so the plane turned around and landed at NTL. coaches were hastily arranged and transported us to SYD. so finally arrived at around 5am

ever since i have been extremely careful not to take flights that run even the remotest risk of missing curfew (i just stay overnight and fly in the morning) - so i am not sure what happens on late QF flights. not even sure if DJ still diverts to NTL or BNE either

I have never heard of dispensation being granted. Dispensation can only be granted by the Minister or his delegate.
2) Land somewhere else (MEL, maybe even ADL)
That is the normal approach if delayed enroute, having departed believing they could make it before curfew.
3) Stay in PER Till it will arive after the curfew is lifted
4) Stay in PER if the crew ges out of hours
this will be the likely choice if they know they are not going to make it before curfew.

I guess a 744 with a total of 15 people on board does not meet whatever criteria may be applied in discerning these applications.
 
Thats a little harsh ! Australian citizens stuck in India unplanned and they would make them wait even longer, i remember this incident and how QF got a lot of bad press, Then you find out it was somebody decideing if a replacment plane could take off or not that meant a further 8hrs delay to people.

Well I hope that the folk stuck in Delhi on the plane know the reason for a chunk of their delay. Hope the people of Sydney are satisfied in having this affect on others.

i suspect most of us Sydneysiders would be happy for planes to land round the clock. its just a few NIMBYs who whinge about the noise.

yet it was these same people who all chose to buy or rent under the flight path... w*nkers if you ask me
