OK... I'm flying out of SYD at 7am in a week or so....and if that flight was delayed it would mean I couldn't get to my destination (APW) that day as it is the only flight that gets to AKL in time to connect...

When flying out of CBR you could always make sure of it by booking on the first flight out.. as that a/c overnighted here and it could get OUT in fog when others couldn't land..

Here is the dumb question... Does that same situation apply in SYD?

Given that the a/c I'm due to fly on no doubt overnights.. will it get out regardless?????

There are different minimas for IFR take off and landing. So provided it could take off you'd be ok, but most likely delayed as it slows things down. however there are instances where take off and landing is halted.

SLAMs (Significant Lower Alternative Minimas, decided by horizontal visibility and cloud base height) are much more relaxed for take off... So equipment on the ground gets out most of the time. Canberra often hits SLAM over winter... as SLAMs are quite restrictive due to Mount Majura and Ainslee in the vicinity..

That makes sense... just hadn't heard a "technical" description of the reasoning before...

I'll hope firstly (natch) that there is clear weather that morning.... best if the question doesn't arise!

Interesting. I have seen Melbourne have fog and planes leaving, but nothing landing. Worls until you run out of planes on the ground to leave!
