Finally an update to TID Policy coverage on Swine Flu:

http://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/wording/TID_swineflu_070709.pdf

Here is a statement from TID in regard to anyone who is quarantined as a result of Swine Flu:

DATE ISSUED: 8 July 2009

For Policy Holders who are quarantined by a government as a result of H1N1 Influenza, whether diagnosed with the condition or not:
For Policy Holders quarantined by a government as a result of H1N1 Influenza, whether diagnosed with the condition or not, there is provision to claim for Cancellation Expenses.
For Policy Holders who cancel their journey as a result of the threat of H1N1 Influenza:
If policy holders cancel their journey, or portion thereof, as a result of the threat of H1N1 Influenza, without contracting the condition, there is no provision to claim for cancellation expenses.

I actually just bought an annual TR with 10% discount. Good to see that quarantine is now officially covered. :)

Exact same pdf and date but the wording has an extra "no" in it, which reverses the meaning;

For Policy Holders who are quarantined by a government as a result of H1N1 Influenza,
whether diagnosed with the condition or not:
For Policy Holders quarantined by a government as a result of H1N1 Influenza, whether diagnosed with the condition or not, there is no provision to claim for Cancellation Expenses.

I want to make a claim, not sure if I should bother or not. My policy, which I purchased last year has a 'general exclusion' that includes "delay, detention, seizure of confiscation by Customs or other officials", which sounds like what happened in my case.

I didn't get quarantined, but I had the option of quarantined or being turned back at an overland border by Chinese immigration due to a mild fever (which was gone the next day, but was confirmed by a real doctor later the same day). I opted to turn back, it cost me an extra flight, doctors visit and a nights accomodation, about $450 all up. Should I bother?

I'm flying QF to Argentina this week and my GP recommends that we wear masks on the plane. Has anyone noticed many people wearing masks on the long hauls lately?

I saw people with masks on recent flights - travelling both domestic and international, around China/Hong Kong over the last month. I wore one myself on some flights. Not sure if asia is more cautious given they had SARs before and might be more used to it.
It doesn't hurt! And maybe you might have a slightly smaller chance of being quarantined if immigration see you have worn a mask and someone on your plane is ill.
